This is all in my opinion by the way, so don't take offence just because I see things differently to you!
It seems everyone is moving towards the more simple, casual side of gaming. I don't want to waggle about, I don't want to actually move about like a douche, I don't want to play £1 games. I simply want to kick back in the evenings on the sofa/bed, and play a few kick-ass core games after a tiresome day. Is that too much to ask?
Nintendo Sure, Nintendo are becoming more core after the casual-fest that was the Wii, but they aren't doing it very well. Slightly better graphics than are available now, a ridiculous controller (I mean who wants to kick back in the evenings and try to manage that thing!), no word on online, and no nice new core games. I know things will get better as games will be developed, but the Wii-U is not going to satisfy core needs very well, because it is a casual console at heart. Even the white design of the console and controller, is not appealing to me.
Microsoft Microsoft used to be right down my street. There were good core games, the controller is good, etc. The only reason why I didn't get one was for RROD. Anyway, it seems this Microsoft is gone. They know the big bucks lie elsewhere. I can only see a big Kinect focus on the 720. In such a case, I'm out.
Sony Seemingly my only hope. Great core games all year round, good controller and a nice online interface. The PS3 console looks sexy, it looks like something a man would own. But even Sony have been moving away from their 'beast' ways. Move - Piss off. Vita looks ok, but it will still have tons of little silly cheap games and I'm not really into handhelds. So if the PS4 is motion-focussed, or goes casual, there's nothing.
I fear the core twilight years are over. Core games sell a few million copies and cost millions to develop. The casual stuff sells more and is much cheaper, so the industry will no doubt follow the money. I need one out of the 3 companies to just focus on the core, and I can't see it happening. Damn.
