Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Do folks STILL think Rock Band is a flop?

After week 1 sales, many were calling Rock Band a failure.

This week on the 360 RB outsold ME and GHIII at the $170 price point.  This means that the game was definitly on the top of many x-mas lists.

With the single instruments coming out in Feb, I see nothing but a bright future for this franchise.  Which also received many glowing reviews in the various "Best of 2007" articles in print and on the web.

I think Harmonix is finally starting to reap the rewards of all the hard work that lead to this amazing title.  And I hope it really does lead to new ways of distributing and thinking about music.

My 360 can blog!

Gamers have 3 choices this generation: The Exercise Machine, the Movie Machine, or the Game Machine.  What kind of gamer are you?

Did anyone excpect this to flop have they seen the GH sales. Rock Band will have big legs.

Think twice before helping a friend in need.

I got it the day it came out and always knew it would be the bomb, even at $170. The 360 version is sold out at every retailer I have been to. I have seen the PS3 version a plenty ...

yes...price was a big issue but apparently there's a lot of people with a lot of money!

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

I would not buy Rock Band. The premise of the game is good but where the hell am I supposed to store all the crap that comes with it? With GH it's only a guitar with this you have drums, guitar, microphone. You need a storage place to put all this stuff. The price is something that makes me not want to buy it either. I can find something better to do with $170 then buy RB.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

But ... the purpose of this thread was asking if Rock Band is a flop. It isn't. Folks must have a place to store, seeming it's really motoring along.

The other thing - which I mentioned in good detail in my review is - you can play it without friends, but you really need a party to appreciate the game. Plus, you can go online and team with folks to start a band.

I love the game - it blows GH away, IMHO.

I'm not exactly sure how or why that's constructive to the thread :P but if it helps you feel better then all is well. On that note I've seen plenty for both consoles, and my roomates and I are going to pick it up for PS3.

I will agree with the above poster when he stated storage for the damn thing XD thank god we have this odd shaped closet under out stairwell or it would be a massive pain in the ass >_> I hates clutter. Madskillz how is the quality of the set itself? Should we be worried about drumming to hard?

Because folks said it was a flop and I was stating what versions of the game I have seen. I haven't seen a 360 version yet. And the PS3 version isn't selling as well as the 360. Don't get it twisted - I am not trying to start a flame fest in here (though I did bring some marshmallows and a few Prime Ribs).

What I was stating is Rock Band isn't selling off store shelves, but even the PS3 is selling, just not as fast the 360 version.

Comeon, Chrono ... you don't think I would flame,  huh?

The quality for the mic is good - the drums are sturdy BUT if you beat them too hard, they will break. The guitar is the weakest link. The GH II and GH III guitar controllers are much, much sturdier, but it helps when Red Octane made the hardware for GH anyhow, not Harmonix.

And the foot-pedal for the drums is cheap. You can buy a piece of metal off eBay that makes it feel like a real foot-pedal.

You definitely need a lot of room to play this game, but I suspect most folks are setting it up in their living rooms. I have a dedicated room for my video games and it fits just fine.

Atleast where I live, I've seen multiple copies of Rock Band sell at my local Wal-Mart.

Where I live (Ohio), Rock Band is THE game to own - moreso than any other game or system. I pastor a youth group of about 20 kids. I bought RB for them a few weeks ago (argh, $170 is killer on the wallet), but every kid thinks it's the best game they've ever seen - every single one of them asked for RB for Christmas, regardless if they owned a system it could be played on or not.

The preception where I live is that Rock Band>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Guitar Hero

Merely because the drums and there, and incorporates Singstar-like vocals in it. Even a Swiss foreign exchange student that comes to church here loves it, since she's a huge fan of Singstar. Not to mention the drums - more people want to play the drums than any other instrument. That's what makes Rock Band so unique and better than Guitar Hero in so many people's eyes. Having the drums there, and doing a whole "band" is great for alot of the kids.

Then there's the whole DLC part for the X360/PS3 version. I'm very happy that EA/Harmonix are working on this. IMO, one can only wonder how many millions of dollars that EA/Harmonix are going to make off of the DLC.

Either way, Rock Band is beyond a succuess. Selling over 100,000 units a week at $170 is beyond a feat. I think we're looking at one of the games that is going to be responsible for PS3 and X360 sales through the next year, since the Wii doesnt get the game.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Nowadays people tend to call some games a financial/sales flop a little too early.
