Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So... has your opinion changed about Metroid: Other M?

It was a good game that I enjoyed while I played it, but it did not compare to the fantastic Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, and Corruption. I gave it 3/5 stars (liked it) and I still stand by that score.

Still, biggest gripes were:

  • Where's Waldo sequences of finding something (the game gives you no hint on what to find in most of these sequences, so you're basically just flinging your WiiMote everywhere just to try and find a highlighted area. Spent around 10 minutes just trying to find the Ridley baby blood trail.)
  • Speaking of the game giving you no hints on what to do, how was I supposed to know that I needed to use the Power Bomb in the Queen Metroid's stomach? I died seven times before I realized I even had the weapon. By the time I beat her, it just wasn't fun anymore.
  • The final missile sequence with MB and her aliens. Once again, the game gives me no hint (I'm starting to see a pattern) that all I'm supposed to do is shoot MB, instead of the evil aliens attacking me (Silly me, I should have known I was supposed to ignore the things trying to kill me.)
  • One shot in the back with the ice beam completely disables Samus' Power Suit. That's convienient.

When I'm exploring a deloate planet filled with danger at every turn, I enjoy previous Metroids' stategy of not really telling me where to go so I can just explore at my own pace and really feel like I'm searching for something. They got this part right when you go back to retrieve Adam's helmet (best part of the game, easily). But when the game tells you nothing for important parts of the game (like telling you your Power Bomb is activated when you're being digested by the Queen Metroid), it's just silly and is not even remotely fun.

But yes, other than that it's still a solid game with fun action. So yeah... it's good, just not great.

I still dislike it. The story and writing really really bugged me, at times Metroid Other M makes Star Ocean 4's writing and dialogue look like shakespeare, those of you who played Star Ocean 4 know this is no compliment haha. However the core gameplay was very well done, so I'd like to see Team Ninja develop that, but take the story out of Sakamoto's hands.

I made a post countering every one of your bullet points, but that's not my place--I deleted it.  If the game failed to give you the intended experience, then the game failed you.  I could come up with a defense to all of your gripes but the bottom line was that your playthrough was hampered by whatever they thought was the right move.  I will say this:  The "Power Bomb in the stomach" thing was a throwback to the final fight with the Metroid Queen in Metroid 2.  I thought it was a very nice touch.

No.  I don't like the game much at all.

I still have the same issues:

The pacing of the game is ruined because of overlong cutscenes, which franky aren't very good.  I normally don't care about the story in games, especially when it's a mediocre one.  Just let me play the darned game.

The Wii Remote only controls weren't a very wise decision.  Controlling in 3D space doesn't work well with a joypad.  An analog stick would have been more accurate.  Also, the 1st person rooted to the ground missile shooting stuff is nonsense.  Give me the freedom to move please.

The Where's Waldo segments as Smeags so aptly called them were atrocious.  Look, look, and look some more for a miniscule area on the screen that you need to find in order to advance.  Who thought that this was a good idea?

I could go on and on about how Samus' character was raped but it's nothing that hasn't been talked about ad nauseum.  Let's just say that they turned a female Boba Fett into a subservient drone that will burn to death instead of using a suit function that would immediately remedy the situation.

Tap, tap, and tap to dodge and I win.  Maybe I'm too good at games, but the Ridley segment was the only part of the game that posed a true challenge to me and when I figured out the trick, that wasn't very hard either.

Besides for that, it's a pretty good game...

Unless the dialogue  and cut scenes have been shortened to quickly move from one scene or level to the next.  then no, I traded it in for a far better game, goldeneye

When it comes down to it the script is bad.  Prime did the story correctly.  I want to play not have the fluidity of the gameplay brought to a stand still.

And that Ridley scene .....

Even the Metriod database that was pro other M has half the site complaining about the change of Samus character.

This game could have sold better if only they made it for everyone. Instead they alienated a portion of fans

I quite like the new approach tbh certainly has a lot of potential, my only gripe was the lack of indication of what to look for in first person but overall I thought everything else was alright.

I very much enjoyed Other M, and I look forward to playing it again. I thought it was a great but flawed experience, and I'd like to see them try out the formula again and fix the flaws.

Nope, loved it when I got it and played and still love it now. The story fell in perfectly for a continuation of Super Metroid and it developed the character of Samus quite nicely in my opinion.

The Ridley scene was amazing, but my favourite one is when Adam goes to Sector 0

It made Samus seem like a person and not an invincible robot and for that, I will always love it.

I gotta disagree. She was never an invincible robot. Just because some of the games were easy doesn't mean she was like that as a character. Furthermore, being a person requires a three dimensional character. The writing here is what an unpracticed writer thinks a three dimensional character acts and says.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I did not buy it, so I can't comment on the gameplay save that it wasn't compelling enough for me to buy it and I felt the story was unnecessary compared to story-minimalist games that emphasise the player 'being' the main character like Metroid Prime.

However the sales were a failure compared to what Nintendo needed. A Metroid Prime sequel would have sold more (especially in Europe), and a 2D Metroid would have cost a LOT less (and sold better in Japan). Either would have made more money. Other M certainly did not push hardware, that is its biggest failure. The game that seems to be holding up the Wii this holiday is NSMB Wii, not SMG2 or DKC or Other M like Nintendo wanted.

And the music was a failure. Compared to the amazing soundtracks of Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion this was ambient, unmemorable and bland. The music is the part of any videogame that I look forward to the most [I decided not to buy Epic Yarn, DKCR or Pokemon B/W purely based on their lack of good music].

My suggestion for Nintendo is to try another 2D game that is nonlinear like the original Metroid. The last few games (Fusion, Other M, Prime 3) have all been so linear in progression they feel like a chore to complete.
