Forums - Nintendo - Against the grain: Why is the Wii so rubbish at mature games?

As part of my ongoing quest to please Beuli2, I am going to be doing a regular series of threads called "against the grain", bringing up news stories which are either overlooked or too big to miss...

So, here we are once again for "against the grain", this time I'll be looking a bit more closely at mature games sales on the Wii, in light of what Sega said about Madworld. Just in case you missed it, here's a summary;

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=280622

Does what he say have any validility though? I mean, yes, we all know that Call Of Duty sells better on the HD consoles, but this can be explained due to a number of reasons;

1. The COD efforts for Wii have either been skipped, late, or severly lacking in content

2. There has been no advertising for the Wii version. Ever

3. With patchy releases, some may not want to find out whether the Wii has said version

So, this sorta explains COD. But what about other games which "should've been on the PS360" , but now are? Let's have a look at NBA Jam and NMH: Desperate struggle...

1. NBA JAM

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/47589/nba-jam/

First 4 weeks for PS3: 27,507

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/42594/nba-jam/

First 4 weeks for Wii: 69,874

Difference- Wii has sold 240% more by this time than the HD versions

2. No More Heroes

First, let's just remember the outcry there was for this game being on the PS3...

Remembered? OK, here's the Japan-numbers

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/40816/no-more-heroes-heroes-paradise/

PS3 version (first 10 weeks): 25,289

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/7667/no-more-heroes/

Wii version (first 10 weeks): 35,532

Hindsight is a wonderful thing Sega...but Madworld was niche on the Wii, and will be niche anywhere else. You should be thankful Wii development costs are so much lower, because 500k+ isn't a flop, they'd have made money. Developers won't port games off Wii when they sell worse anyway...

Clearly these are good sales anyway; after all, 380k for Conduit got a sequel, as did Okami!

Would Madworld have sold better on the PS360? Doubtful, but maybe (5% increase)

Would it have made a profit, like the Wii version? No

People, if you're waiting for a HD port, don't get your hopes up. Get the Wii version, or no version at all...

So? Do you agree? Is this "fair"? Comment below! Also, if, for some reason, you'd like to see previous threads, then here you go;

Good OP, although some will not read it and instead go off the title (learned that the hard way).

I'm adding that there are hit games in that style on the Wii. They just have to be appealing. Umbrella Chronicles was appealing. Darkside Chronicles tried to hard to be a horror experience (and many gamers saw it as trying to throw a bone in place of a real RE game) and thus did not have as much appeal. Extraction was seen as a dumbed down spinoff, and was ultimately a boring rail shooter, and thus had little appeal.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

the ps3 version of no more heroes doesn't have move support also they're very hard to find well in my country that is.

What I want from a game.

Gameplay > Story > Content > Graphics

Visual Style > Graphics

Smooth Camera, Intuitive Controls

Friction! When everything feels right!

Happy games with mushrooms and clouds with smiley faces are enough for me.

Above: Beuli2 likes happy games, although one Metroid Prime here or a COD there are good too.

Above: still the best game of the year.

I'll keep this in mind for my next thread

Although, WHERE WAS YOUR SCORE?

...or have you abolished it after my previous instalment

I'm glad you think my OP is good!

Although, Darkside chronicles is looking as though it could still break a million sold. Also, it's current sales aren't bad, by any stretch...

Though I agree about Extraction; just what were EA thinki...

Oh yeah, that's right, nothing

This thread doesn't need a score. You'll need to improve 10 over this to even have a score.

Honestly. it depends on the specific genre/game. To say that Wii can or cannot sell "core" or "mature" games is stupid. If every CoD game till the last one has been handicapped on the Wii, obviously the CoD fanbase will be on PS360. All those small new IPs, if they're not attempting to directly steal from a PS360 fanbase, will almost certainly sell better on Wii than on the PS3 or 360, simply because of the larger base.

And they'll definitely make more profit.

Really interesting OP.

I bought me MadWorld and though its aesthetics were great I didn't really like its gameplay. Motion controls for fighting were really well implemented in Bully, a game that was not so popular as it could have been. I'll never forget the day I got it, as early as I bought my Wii in 2008 after almost years without gaming. Seeing those stupid kids wanting to welcome me to school and punching my way through... That was so exciting.

I would like to know just how well certain games are being advertised before seeing their sales.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!
