Forums - Sales Discussion - Patcher: Sony should copy 3DS

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-22-pachter-sony-should-copy-3ds

Sony has dropped the ball when it comes to portable entertainment and should copy the 3DS for the PSP2, insists industry analyst Michael Pachter.

Wedbush Morgan's resident motormouth told IndustryGamer, "I'm completely baffled by Sony's PSP strategy. They owned the portable entertainment market with the Walkman, and sat back and watched as Nintendo dominated games and Apple dominated music.

"They never quite got it right with an MP3 player, and their initial effort in games was a bit too pricey and sophisticated for the majority of the portable gaming market - kids under 13. They have a new ad campaign with a kid as spokesperson, so I suppose we should wait and see if it works.

"I continue to think pricing is an issue," he continued, "but if the 3DS comes out at $249, the $169 PSP might seem like a bargain. If Sony were really smart, they'd emulate the 3DS and put a 3D screen on the PSP2."

Sony remains tight-lipped regarding its next handheld but a Mortal Kombat developer who has apparently slapped eyes on the PSP's successor last week dubbed it a "pretty powerful machine".

Sony said 3D is imprecise within handhelds so I wonder why would they do i for PSP2 in this case.

Just give them some time. It took years for Sony to copy the Wii.

This is what I've been saying!!!

Just slap dual analogs on it.

This guy really thinks copying will allow one company to compete and win?

Good thing no one actually listens to his advice, or we would have so many companies going right out of business and no one innovating at all.

Do most people see sony as less innovative than Nintendo in terms of gaming??

I for a fact do, it seems like sony doesnt have the conviction to expand new ideas...IMO

Sony also bad-mouthed motion controls in 2006.

Well Pacher they are not waiting for you to tell them to copy Nintendo as that is their aria of expertise ;)

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

i think the biggest thing sony can do right now is make a good handheld system for as cheap as possible.  if they can make the psp2 for $200 that would be huge.  the ps3 and the psp were both very expensive when they came out, and i think thats why they were so slow to get buyers.

Copying a competitor is an often used business strategy, usually successful too.

It can't really be "successful."  Assuming the two successfully market the handhelds, and the games on each appeal and equal amount, they'd kind of both tie and come out even  ("even" in the economic sense of the word, it might entail profit, but not more than they could've made elsewhere in the market).  You're not losing money, but you're not making money either.  Of course, this doesn't consider the fact that Nintendo has pretty much unmatched first party games when it comes to mass appeal and sales, so assuming the portables were relatively even, Nintendo would probably still win out.

In general, whenever a profitable company lacks competition, competitors will come and copy, and the market will even out for everyone (who isn't driven out of the market) until someone gains an advantage.  This assumes equal products, marketing, etc.  What makes that challenging to do in the game market is that it's very hard to get games that compete with Nintendo's first party stuff, and that's why no one can really "copy" Nintendo.

This is all Economy 101, and it's kind of pathetic to see people like Pachter completely miss it.  The issue is not that Pachter doesn't understand business; it's that he doesn't understand games.  If you can't understand games, you can't understand the biggest advantage a company can gain in this industry.
