Though 2010 really looks good in terms of line-up for this gen, I agree that probably 1998 seemed to be the best year in VG history.

Personally, that year falls to 1996, since it had some of the best iterations, to me, of known VG series. Plus, my favourite game released in 1996 as well xD

Final Fantasy VI > Any metroid and game except MGS4

Ummm....some of those games were released last year like MH3, DQIX, and FF13. I know you'll say bah, Japan only, but you also have Pokemon Black/White on there and that's only going to be released in Japan in 2010 (2011 release everywhere else).

I played and cleared DQIX last year, I'm not even sure if I've played it this year. I pretty sure I haven't touched FF13 since Dec. of last year.

If you removed all the mediocre games it doesnt seem that many.

If you only include games with over 85% score on Gamerankings there are only 25 games. Multiplatform games only count as one and i didnt include expansions  and remakes.

2008 has more, over 30 games.

^But it is not the end of the year their probably end a lot more above the 85%...

Halo Reach, Fable III, Little Big Planet II, Fallout New Vegas etc;..

I hate to say this, but this year is still second to 1998. You are also missing a WHOLE lot of strategy games on your list, most notably Civ V and DoWII:CR.

1998 was truly a beast of a year.
