Forums - Sales Discussion - How do you predict the PS3 'jailbreak' will effect h/s sales

How do you predict the PS3 'jailbreak' will effect hardware and software?

Assuming this scenario, the hack works for pirating all game released prior to September 20th 2010, past that point firmware prevents the hack from gamedumping new releases, or connecting to PSN. (this seems the most likely theory, to me, you can post your thoughts on this too if you wish, but keep on the topic of piracy impact on hardware and software sales figures on the PS3).

If anyone doesn't think the hack is real: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-psjailbreak-article?page=2 but please note. I don't in any way condone piracy, it's definitely bad. Regardless of platform. I would have quite enjoyed to mess around with some homebrew, y'know - get the PS3 finally able to play my PS3 games,  however I'm disgusted that this hack as skipped straight to gamedumping. Just wanted to make my stance know encase anyone got the wrong idea.

Thankyou.

Your post was lost? Not quite sure what you mean. o_o

Anyway, as far as I see it, hardware sales will see a small boost, software sales will see a small decrease. It won't be the same scenario as with PSP, so long as Sony fix it. Largely because the PS3 is more reliant on it's online facilities, which won't be accessible.

On the PSP, you can go online no matter what PSP you're on. Homebrew or no, the presumed reason here is because - 99% of PSP games are offline. So why would Sony remove access from there store alone?

I do wonder how many of the people who hacked there 360s, would have done so if they had know that they would have been banned from the XBOX Live service, on top of that how many of the hacked 360s, were used to steal retail games. Probably most of them mind you.

I post here though largely because most of you guys know more about what you're talking about than I do. So I'm interested on how you feel this'll effect Sony / the PS3 from a business perspective.

Well it only works on 3.41 so no effect at all.

It works on systems prior to 3.41.

I think it's naive to say it'll have no effect at all. I believe there are plenty people who are happy to stay offline, so long as they can pirate games.

this, my friends are desperate for this and they still dont know the "good" news. today i was talknig abou how you can download wii games to an external hd and play them from there, and one of them almost yell to me "what system?" "the wii" i said. "oh" he said

It should slowly collapse the PS3 market.  The DS, Wii and PC markets have collapsed because of this crap.  I have heard ppl at work buy the system and "back up/Share" games up to 15 games per system on the Wii.  I reakon depending on how savy the  PS3 owners are it will hurt sales esp with the upcomming Move release!

Sony will likely fix the issue in a firmware update like MS did with the JTAG exploit (although they took far too long) before it becomes an issue in western markets.
