I'm calling it right now...people who say something will be the best thing of the year when the year isn't even half over are freaking stupid...

Then you should have been here in January when people were saying the same thing about Mass Effect 2. Or March when people were saying the same thing about God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII. At least the year is ALMOST halfway over. And the reviews on this one are higher then any of those 3 games. ;)

For what it's worth, Mass Effect 2 has higher reviews than Red Dead Redemption.

Oh yeah. I was looking at the PC version yesterday (94) and for some reason thought they were the same score. Which was dumb admittedly considering PC scores tend to get harsher reviews. It's still actually really close though.

No harm, no foul. I mistakingly assumed the PC version had the same score as the Xbox 360 one as well.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

The game is a masterpiece and I'm really surprised it hasn't gotten more 10s.  This isn't meant as a slight to other games, there have been some pretty amazing ones released so far this year, but this one really brings its genre to new heights and just offers so much that it's hard to imagine it being topped anytime soon.  I used to roll my eyes at people declaring a game as Game of the Year when the year wasn't even half over but I really think this game will garner many GotY awards.

Some people called it 6 months ago.

For me the GOTY will almost certainly be FFXIII.

But RDR is looking for a contender...but when you consider:

ME2
SMG2
Zelda
Alane Wake Halo Reach
God of War 3
Possibility of GT5
Possibility of LBP2

in that order....it looks pretty tough.

Fixed :D!!!

god I hope not.

Why not Reach? It's the next big Halo after 3.

Alan Wake is no contender at all. If that's a contender, then games like Super Street Fighter IV, Heavy Rain, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Bioshock 2, etc should all be big contenders because they're all reviewed way higher than Alan Wake.

I'm just sayin.

Well I just don't want Reach to win personally. I'm not a huge fan of Halo and I think the games I named are lightyears ahead of that series. That being said, I haven't played Reach yet so who knows.

Also, I completely forgot, but Heavy Rain should def. be in that list.

I was totally not interested in RDR up until a few days. Checking out all the stuff about it has gotten me really interested in the game and I ended up ordering the RDR LE for the 360 (of course!). I'm not sure if it'll win GOTY (I still want ME2 to win!), but it looks like it's going to be a pretty awesome game.

(I ordered an import of the game from the USA, since RDR doesn't come out in Japan until September and I'd rather play it in English instead of Japanese, haha)

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

Does this game employ digital or analog controls for moving? I couldn't enjoy GTA due to digital controls.

Not sure I agree 100%, but in terms of logic he's got a point.
The only game that even came close to beating out MGS4 for the sheer amount of GOTY's in '08 was GTAIV...
And lets be honest here; all of the additions to the game weren't even all that, the cover system was especially wonky and the world didn't really feel all that alive-you had barely any measure of communication with the inhabitants.
I'm saying this as an owner of the game. RDR just looks so much better; the cover system looks functional, the online play is integrated into the game world, the ecosystem and frequent wanted posters plastered all over the world, etc. All these additions make it feel like what GTAIV was trying to be.
Personally, my Game of The Year so far is Mass Effect 2, with Alan Wake following closely behind as an honorable mention, but if critics loved GTAIV for the flawed experience that it was, why wouldn't they love RDR???

One point isnt gonna make a difference...RDR is 95 on Metacritic where ME2 is 96...I think Me2 only had an appeal to certain people where RDR has greater appeal because its made by rockstar who makes GTA...its a western GTA...

My vote still goes to Mass Effect 2

And this is in MS section why?

Definitive version.

But yeah, TC is right. Didn't really expect this at all, thought it would be just another Manhunt or Bully and now it's up there with GTA. Great surprise. Mass Effect 2 finally has a true competitor for GOTY.

it certainly has a chance of 360 GOTY

You never disappoint me skeeuk.....just outstanding trolling there even though if we were to stop the year right now  ME2 would be the 360's GOTY and the PS3's would be RDR......the overall would be between ME2 and SMG2

Trolling. GOW3 would be PS3s GOTY!
