and since the Cell processor in the PS3 will soon go to the 22nm scale!,that also mean's more profit there also.

The Cell currently sits at 45nm, the next step will be 32nm (I'm guessing will happen this Summer/Fall).  Only after 32nm has been on the market for about 2-3 years will a new die shrink occur.

It's funny how this generation of console price actually mattered unlike the generation before it were PS2 always costed $100 USD more than the GC.

Sony's PlayStation 3 turns profitable

May 13, 2010, 5:34 AM EDT

Sony has finally begun making money on its PlayStation 3 console and expects its game business to turn a profit this year, the company said Thursday.

"The turnaround represents a success for Sony's new management team, which made profitability at the division a key short-term goal when it took over in April 2009."

During the three month period Sony started making money on each console sold.

plus with new 40nm RSX they are making even more money

and since the Cell processor in the PS3 will soon go to the 22nm scale!,that also mean's more profit there also.

don't know if they are dev 32nm or 22nm,32 nm will be possible by this fall for sure.

anyways it will be profit.Plus they could price-cut of about $60-70 and still profit after CELL 32nm or 22nm introduction

32nm was happening but Sony snubbed it an year ago.

they could be back on it but they could go to 22nm too.

Most likely 32nm.And 22nm will be there 2011 fall

OMG! I thought it was just me! this guy has been asking the silliest questions for weeks now.

what is with all these negative threads?? do you like being negative this month??

There will be a ps4 but not until later than normal, not unless they do what nintendo did and make a cheaper more profitable console, this could actually happen you know:):)

1. PS3 is currently making profit.
2. PS3 allowed Sony to make HUGE profits due to Bluray winning.
3. PS3 will be the highest 2nd place sales for any console in history. (yeah I said it 360 lovers)
4. Even SEGA didn't stop making consoles until it had several money losing ventures. Sony has only had one and that may end up overall profitable in the end, 2013 NO 10 YEARS BUDDY, one year after PS4 is launched.

agree on the whole thing but PS3 will be selling more than 2013.

PS3's 10 year cycles ends in 2016 so as follows:

PS4 will launch in 2012 but people still buy the old systems for atleast 2 years.so atleast 2014

Plus developing markets only start buying systems on previous gen when a new gen comes, look how PS2 is doing in Brazil. It was only launched last year.

Plus devs keep developing for older consoles so sytems will sell.

You *may* be right with 2yrs vs 1 and that's only because this is the first gen where the 2/3rd place consoles actually sold a good amount and anything a 3rd party wants to put out on the 'last gen' can easily be put on both for good potential ROI.

At least you agree the 10 year stuff, isn't happening and 2012 will be launch of new machines.

Lets be honest here. Sony has not made a profit on the PS3 ever since it launched. Even with big hitters like God of War 3 PS3 still didnt profit. Is there a chance that sony might not make a console for the next generation and just make software like Sega did.

the PS3 is profitable....

By the time the PS4 is released, the PS3 will be extremely profitable at a smaller price point (ala PS2 during PS3 launch). There is no reason for them to stop producing PS3s when people will buy them as a Blueray player that does a bit more (Ive purchased 3 PS2s since I got my 60g Ps3, all for DVD players)

Sony is a large enough company that they are willing to take lumps in one part of their company (gaming) if it helps out another portion of the company (their movie studios, blueray division, tvs, etc) and I do not see the PS3 in any way shape or form a flop. It has done what it needed to do (beat HDDVD) and now that it is profitable, lets see just how much Sony can make off it.

The main point, that comparisons with Nintendo's past systems and Sega don't really apply here, has already been made. I certainly believe there will be a PS4 but not because "Nintendo still made Wii after GC" etc, that's a totally different situation for a whole host of reasons.

Also I think some people need to be more careful to distinguish between profiting at a given point in time versus profiting over a longer period of time. The PS3 is, and by all accounts has been, profiting per systems sold for several months now, that's not a debate. PS3 is CURRENTLY profiting but whether it will be profitable across it's lifespan is a totally different kettle of fish. The PS3 has dug itself a 5+ billion dollar hole (not sure of the exact figure) which makes the chances of it ever breaking, even if the 10 year plan comes to fruition, pretty unlikely given that the PS2 in it's best year barely made a billion.
