I'm going to play a bit of devils advocate.

So no. RPGS have shitty game play and pretty much consist mostly on story and hopefully an amusing minigame. Remove the massive amounts of healing, remove the endless meaningless combat and these combat mechanics will be more meaningful. As it is I sorta agree with the poster. Why play a game when the game isn't a game at all? Well just play it for the story. Heck Square seems to agree.

Hold L1 and R1 to run.

Massive healing from items bought with your mountain of gold?  Gone.  Endless combat?  Mostly gone.  Easy battles?  Gone.

Never understood the complaints about RPGs being too easy.  It's not that they're easy, it's just that they give the player the ability to select the difficulty and, given the choice, most people pick easy.  Spend 40 hours grinding mooks to hit the level cap before the second town and yeah the game will be easy.  You just spent 40 hours making it easy.  Complaining at that point is silly and complaining that the developer decided to give you a choice is even sillier.

Haha, this is a very good point - in a game like Baldur's Gate, I got totally caught up in the side quests, used a combination of brilliant (if I do say so myself) tactics, and took advantage of poor ai and 'sploits to kill enemies much too hard for me. then when I got around to doing the main quest I was really overpowered. However, I didn't blame the developer. They could have, with a few lines of code, prevented me from doing this. But they didn't and that made the game much more fun

Although, a fair few RPG's you cannot grind in. Fire Emblem for example

Outside of the story, I like the customization of characters.

Unless your playing an RPG, there is very rarely a game that comes close to most RPGs when it comes to a selection of things you can do to make your character awesome.

Also, gameplay is usually upto the person. I enjoy the tactical nature of RPGs and SRPGs. I also like the combat in a few WRPGs as well. Fallout 3 has some of the best 'OMG AWESOME' moments of gunfighting in almost any game.

Outside of a few simulation/strategy games, RPGs are my favorite. If you prefer your games to be single player, they usually exceed most other genres by dozens in hours in terms of lengths and content.

Also, the worlds crafted in RPGs are usually better constructed than 90% of non-RPGs. For example, the worlds in Mass Effect and Fallout are without comparison.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Usually what I hear is that RPGs have great stories, interesting chartecters, etc

But I rarely hear about people liking the RPG gameplay!

Personally I hate RPG gameplay either turn based or real-time! There are many good games that I don't play just because of their RPG element in them!

We play games to have fun, as I understand people play RPG for the story, but why not make the gameplay fun too? I just can't see anyone liking the RPG gameplay, it is super unrealistic and super boring...

Ok Mass Effect is fine, Fallout 3 is just on the border, but I still can't see how can people like the gameplay of games like Final Fantasy! FF they are great games but because of the story NOT the gameplay!!! FF fans say that FF7 is the best in the series, but it is only because of the story not the gameplay!

So why not make a good story AND fun/realistic gameplay???

And if someone does like RPG gameplay, can they explain why?

Gameplay for an RPG involves requiring to use some sort of play mechanics from other genres, in order to be done.   Well, that is unless you use the JRPG menu system.  Outside of characters and the story, what you have as part of an RPG is grinding and leveling up, which gets to be very addictive in nature, and hooks people into playing.  You have a big overarching story that keeps you on your seat and smaller sets of goals that requiring completing subtasks to complete.  Combine these together, and you end up having something.

So, let me know what exactly don't you like here:

1. Interesting characters and stories.

2. Leveling up and building up stats.

3. Exploring a world and discovering new things.

So, which of these a gaming having will cause you not to play it?

RPGs are a skinner box. Take away that, and they've got nothing. I hate that RPG elements are infesting FPSs. But then again, some people are just so bad at games that they have to be rewarded for the time they spent playing because everyone has grown up thinking that they are special.

And I hate that shooter elements are infesting RPGs

I love real-time, trial/error based western RPGs... especially the gameplay. But for any game you need a combination of polished gameplay and good story to really get into it IMO

I like that genres are mixing together.  Its made some of my favorite games in the past such as River City Ransom, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Diablo II, Battlefield 2, Age of Empires III, etc.

Complaining that genres should be stagnant and only stick to one thing is complaining that gaming should never evolve and die.

Also, complaining that a player shouldn't be rewarded for extended play of a game is just dumb.  What's the point in playing a game?  Whether you're talking about Battlefield or Final Fantasy, the concept of giving people rewards for their time playing is not new and its just encouragement to keep playing.  And its not limited to RPGs.  Heck, they've been doing it since the days of the Atari and NES.  Even before FPS or many other genres existed.

I do not complain about innovation - I complain when these innovations make the genre's I like less enjoyable to me. For me, Final Fantasy XIII as an example, was  much too simple, easy, and streamlined for me - this is a direct result of the contamination from making it more accesible for FPS gamers, and should be in no way encouraged

um you do realize thats your opinion and yours alone , everything you said i do not agree with 100% , i find the gameplay in rpgs very rewarding and deep and it wouldnt be hard to find lots of people who think this as well.

your definition of fun is the visceral action but you dont consider a game like chess or risk to be fun in anyway man expand that mind a bit sheesh

Because players should be rewarded for skill?
