I am by no means "old". I am actually a little less than 20. Last weekend, I brought PD64 to a cousins house to convince them to buy PD for XBLA. They had recently bought a xbox 360 and wanted recommendations for games to buy. I immediately told them that PD64 was one the best vallues in gaming, especially considering the multiplayer mode. They wanted me to show them the Single Player first, but that was a BIG mistake, because they did not want to even pick the game up after showing them the chicago level. They thought the games AI was stupid, the graphics suck, and the control scheme was horrible. And the game they were comparing it to? HALO 3
I personally think that HALO 3 is the most overated piece of crap ever. (this is not a rant thread, so I won't get into detail). The game is simply not balanced. He thought that the game was simply too easy, and that you could simply walk away from a guard, and they would do nothing. "The AI is so stupid. Halo 3 has MUCH better AI". I finally convinced them to try PD, but this is the response. "why don't you put down the 64 controller so we can play Halo? Halo 3 has pretty much the same modes, but better graphics".
Later, my an older cousin (none of them live together) came over. He asked me if it was Perfect Dark and was surprised it looked so good. I told him that I liked it better than Halo 3, and he said that it's because this game was so "revolutionary". He is 24, so he lived through the N64 lifetime, unlike me. For some reason, he was able to understand the significance of the game, as did I, but my younger cousins did not. He said that he still enjoys the game, but because he has not played it for a very long time, he is not used to the control scheme.
So my question is: Why do younger people have such difficult time understanding the signifcance of Perfect Dark? Why do people who have lived through the release fully understand it and respect it? (I guess this is similar to the OOT/SM64 debate). Finally, how can I make my 360 FPS obssessed cousins understand how ahead of its time PD was? Also, because I was too young to play it when it came out, please offer some refreshers as to why the game was so special.
*I realize this is like the 5th thread I made about my family/friends*
