Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Perfect Dark and the Younger Generation.

I am by no means "old". I am actually a little less than 20. Last weekend, I brought PD64 to a cousins house to convince them to buy PD for XBLA. They had recently bought a xbox 360 and wanted recommendations for games to buy. I immediately told them that PD64 was one the best vallues in gaming, especially considering the multiplayer mode. They wanted me to show them the Single Player first, but that was a BIG mistake, because they did not want to even pick the game up after showing them the chicago level. They thought the games AI was stupid, the graphics suck, and the control scheme was horrible. And the game they were comparing it to? HALO 3

I personally think that HALO 3 is the most overated piece of crap ever. (this is not a rant thread, so I won't get into detail). The game is simply not balanced. He thought that the game was simply too easy, and that you could simply walk away from a guard, and they would do nothing. "The AI is so stupid. Halo 3 has MUCH better AI". I finally convinced them to try PD, but this is the response. "why don't you put down the 64 controller so we can play Halo? Halo 3 has pretty much the same modes, but better graphics".

Later, my an older cousin (none of them live together) came over. He asked me if it was Perfect Dark and was surprised it looked so good. I told him that I liked it better than Halo 3, and he said that it's because this game was so "revolutionary". He is 24, so he lived through the N64 lifetime, unlike me. For some reason, he was able to understand the significance of the game, as did I, but my younger cousins did not. He said that he still enjoys the game, but because he has not played it for a very long time, he is not used to the control scheme.

So my question is: Why do younger people have such difficult time understanding the signifcance of Perfect Dark? Why do people who have lived through the release fully understand it and respect it? (I guess this is similar to the OOT/SM64 debate). Finally, how can I make my 360 FPS obssessed cousins understand how ahead of its time PD was? Also, because I was too young to play it when it came out, please offer some refreshers as to why the game was so special.

*I realize this is like the 5th thread I made about my family/friends*

Because they grew up playing games with great graphics.

I doubt you can make them understand, in time they might appreciate the game but they could care less because there are better games out there that they are interested in.

They may appreciate things when they get older and more educated solely due to how their respect for history may build.

However, with the way things are in the industry, graphics take precedence over everything. With that in mind, things are taken at face value.

PD is an absolutely great game. Just be happy that you were able to play, enjoy and aprecciate because games likes that dont come very often.

mean while my little sister (6) from playing 360/ps3 games to pre-atari games and is only concerned with having fun (from Earth defense force 2017 to metal slug to telstar arcade cartridge #3 to contra) and never cares about visuals
the only legitimate complaints about perfect dark are the terrible frame rate and incredible blurriness on the 64, both of which I thought rendered the game difficult to play when it first came out but are rectified on the 360
perfect dark on the 360 is pure gold, why don't they try the demo with the perfect frame rate and clearer textures since it is free to download
regardless part of the problem is that younger gamers are brought up on the thumb sucking hide behind a rock regenerating health age, 10 bucks says their heads would explode with some of the later challenge I'm on 20 something or other right now (you know the one with the cheating opponents that simply all have shields and numerous weapons...oh wait that's every later mission) buy it is nice to face off against cheating perfect sims again

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

because they just followers and play halo because every other kids does (its popular)
you would give them a fps thats like halo but better in every way and they will tell you halo is better

Nintendo made me a gamer so I'd be stupid to ever try to forget that                                             like so many people nowadays

The Top  Best Consoles Are SNES and PSX

Currently Playing: 1.Monster Hunter tri 2.MegaMan 10

it's very, very simple. They grew up playing Halo, not perfect Dark. They don't give a rat's ass about it.

They don't really appreciate it because now kids want cool graphics and guns and explosions, 'cause that's what the market pushes.

Anyways, I probably wouldn't like Perfect Dark either, even if I do enjoy some classics like Zelda. FPSs tend to become outdated much quicker.

Because things evolve, and age. It's hard as hell for me to go back and play goldeneye, even though that was THE SHIT when I was 15. It's not just graphics, but control, level design, AI, UI, everything about design. It has improved drastically over the years and unless you were there and understand the games within the context of their time, you are going to inevitably compare old games to new games, and the old are primitive in a variety of ways.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

The little fuckers deserve to die. N64 games had great graphics but if you start on a superior system such as Xbox, PS2, or GameCube, then you are going to think that the graphics are crap on systems prior to it.

I'm surprised they said the game looked like crap. The textures have all been bumped up to super hi-resolution and a lot of the backgrounds have been remade so they don't look like disasters of polygons.

Perfect Dark on XBLA looks fantastic. It sure as hell looks better than any shooter on the PS2.

I'm in love with the game. The multiplayer is unbalanced as hell, but it's just so much fun, and the amount of features and customizations are unparalleled.
