Forums - Gaming Discussion - Motion Controls

Motion controls are fine, so long as developers use them properly. Right now for example, I cannot emphasize enough, just how awesome Red Steel 2 is. It's an epiphany of awesome, and something everybody ought to try! It's honestly the first game where the motion controls feel like a huge improvement over traditional controls, and it is a wicked game to play!

That's not to say a game like Fallout 3 should have controls like that, because they are tiring (in the good way ) in the long run, but just aiming with a pointer can still be more fun than using dual analogues. My problem with motion controls so far have mostly been about the shortcomings of the Wii, but M+ have rectified much of that, and it seems the last bit will be taken care off by the Move.

So, here's hoping for an awesome future of motion controlled games!

Why do you "bite the heads off casual gamers"? Say what you like, but casual gaming still introduces a lot of money into the gaming economy, which is a good thing, especially in these tough times.

as for the actual thread, i also find motion technology for such devices to be used by casual gamers, and have no reason to think otherwise. But think of this topic as if you are sony, MS or nintendo. As for nintendo, they look to be in the worse condition. Their only aspect that they have superiority over the 360 and PS3 with is the motion controller. what happens when their competetion creates better motion technology? well pro gamers will no this, but the wii will not have anything that with apeal to anyone. games? unless your 4 and want to be a plumber when you grow up and decide to play a game wen your constantly an Italian plumber who goes by mario, well then go right ahead and game it all u want, and have fun. As for MS, Natal in my mind is the best of the motion sensor technology, but it is also difficult to develop for. RING ANY BELLS? the CBE for the PS3 compared to the Xenon for the 360. CBE has 7 SPEs controller by a PPE, giving you the power to almost do anything. over twice the power of the Xenon and also capable of taking over the GPUs part. $400 million wisely invested. but when developers, usually one developing for multi platform games dont utilize it, which ends up making a downed version for the 360 counterpart. Role reversal now, huh. despite the Natal will most if not all the games for it will be exclusives, its still a challenge. but as i said from the start, motion sensor technology is for casual gamers, which means nothing to me, so i turn to the powerful system that doesnt depend on 1 piece of hardware to sell 70 million units. THE PS3. dont bother disputing it guys ull just lose.

Dispute what? It seems you were trying to point something out, but I'm not sure what. That the Wii is for casuals? That the PS3 is über l33t? That Move and Natal will make the Wii stop selling?

Because most of what you said is easily disputed, and only the parts that are your opinion can't be.

I like what most people are contributing to this.

@Rainbird
I have yet to play Red Steel 2,truth be told doubt I will for a long time, closest Wii I can get too doesn't have motion plus and my is in Uni,so he's not bought any games aside from Final Fantasy XIII for his girlfriend in 7 or 8 months.Shame too tbh, cause you've sparked my interest in the game :D as for Wii motion plus I read it's not supported in some games?

Well, I can understand your view.

I think Motion Controls are fine for what they offer but as ever too many people see (or at least post) as if things are black and white - for example motion controls make everything better, or they are 100% terrible.

I have a Wii and enjoy playing it. I've never found the controls to be as good as I'd like - i.e. they are an approximation rather than an accurate recreation. For example playing table tennis on Wii doesn't actually feel right if you've played a reasonable amount of table tennis for real, and so on.

But the concept is fun and where the Wii does well for me is Wii Sports Resort, etc. where it's just fun playing with your kids and moving around.

However, the number of true, good motion control games on Wii is tiny so far, and in my view right now motion controls haven't shown any ability to improve existing schemes for most of the popular genres.

Natal I'm interested in as well but I feel the "no controller" angle is quite flawed for games right now. Of course MS can easily go back on this, in a sense both Natal and Move are examples of MS and Sony going back on statements made around Wii at launch - but that's business. Thing's change and companies change with them.

Move I think could offer the best of both if Sony pull of the tech correctly. I think it's combination of controllers plus camera is the best mix for gaming, but of course they will need to have the skill and creativity to produce the games to exploit this.

As for hypocrisy of fans... well, that's a sad given I think we all have to try and ignore it when it goes too far - or reach for a mod. Anything that succeeds will be both copied or emulated as others angle for a slice of the pie. Once the Wii was successful it was inevitable that Sony and MS would change their tune.

The Xbox and 360 exist because the PS1/PS2 were so successful. PSN exists because Live was successful, Halo exists because Doom and Half Life were so successful, Lips exists because Singstar was successful... and so on.

I think people should remain objective to market realities and also should be open to at least giving new approaches, like Motion Controls, a try.

But nobody should feel they have to like Motion Controls. They don't an I can understand how for some they simply don't feel right.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Only a few games at this time support the motion plus tech. You can buy Red steel 2 with Mothion plus for 10 more dollars, which saves you ten from buying just the Motion Plus for 20. Wii Sports Resort also uses it and comes with Motion Plus too. I think that is pretty much it at the moment. Oh, the new Zelda will be using motion plus too if that is more you thing.

I think there are five games that support it so far. WSR, Red Steel 2, Tiger Woods 2010 (or whatever it's called), and two tennis games I can't remember the names off.

And I really think any sceptic of motion controls that like more traditional games should play Red Steel 2. One of the first things I did when I started playing was to change to my jogging suit and bare feet so I could move around properly and go nuts! It's great fun to play!

trust me, many kids try to dispute, despite the raw facts. No matter how optimistic someone can be, when u test consoles and match them up, there is always a winner, no opinion needed, but they think that if they complain and call me biased, then it will help their console out. Its that almost all wii owners and many 360 owners dont know anything about their console. they dont know the hardware, and how it compares to other consoles, i mean some ps3 owners dont know that either, but those who do actually know stuff on their system, and can apply that in a dispute, theres no come back. but oh its funny to see them try.

tl;dr
