Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What Is So Great About Lost Odyssey's Storyline?

@g-value I agree. Thats why I can't watch most action movies either.

Meh, such is life.

Notice I said it didn't repulse me so much. It still repulsed me, just less ;P Blue Dragon for example was horrible in the same way.

You say it isn't any different from any normal JRPG. Is the standard really that low or is it something that occurs throught the translation between Japanese and English? It really baffles me why a script would be written the way they are, I literally can't watch any of the cutscenes.

Do you know of any JRPG's that don't suffer this problem? Because I really love turn based battle systems.

EDIT it doesn't help that my native accent is being so brutally butchered by the most annoying character either.

Even if you disregard cultural barriers, I don't see how you can find every cutscene cheesy, even the ones where there's only action going on and no dialogue. Also, it's not a JRPG only issue, there's tons of cheesy dialogues and cutscenes in WRPG's as well.

OT - The story per se, if you take it out of the context of the characters and the 1000 year dreams, seems pretty bland and disconnected. That's what makes Lost Odyssey so great. Normally JRPG's are mostly dependent on how the story develops, with the characters having borderline influences.

In Lost Odyssey, the entire story is dependent on how the characters develop, as they go through their memories, reshaping they history that they had lost, be it forcefully or simply by their desire. The pain, the struggle and the soul-searching that each one of the immortals go through is what makes the game so great. That, and Jansen XD

I'm sorry, but I disagree with you on everything you said (except Jansen of course :D). Good character-driven storylines to me are like what you see in games like Tales of Vesperia. Now that game had a wonderful character-driven story. But you didn't like ToV so..........

Also, I know plenty of other jrpgs that are very character-driven. You just played one, FFXIII.

Nah not every-cutscenes, that was exaggeration. And I didn't mention WRPGs but I agree with you on that aswell. There were plenty of momenets in Mass Effect 2 I felt the same way, just not to the same level.

You should play one of the early Ultima's, sometimes the dialogue look like run-of-the-mill cheesy series from the 80s xD

If you ever get your hands on Parasite Eve, give it a go. While it's still a JRPG, the mood and actual gameplay fits more the likes of a Survival Horror. Plus, it has a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo dialogue in it too (Although I understand all of it, for most people it is mumbo-jumbo), which departs from the usual emotional type of dialogue on JRPG's

Yeah I just think its a taste thing. It sucks because I really enjoy turn based games.

You guys should play Anachronox. Its a pc rpg in the jrpg vein but developed by western developers. Its got a great sense of humour. Doubt you can buy it anymore though.

I never said I didn't like ToV :P I just said that it's the worst Tales game i've played. Tales of Vesperia characters have nothing on Tales of Phantasia ones. Heck, few games have better plot twists than the one in the end of ToP, you'll feel dirty, ashamed and thinking that everything you did was as selfish as being an evil character.

FFXIII is very character-driven too, but the story, for most of the game, simply skims over the characters. In the end, although it seems you made strides in the story, you'll find that it was pretty much for naught. Plus, most people won't understand the point in the end, because the English translation of the entire finale (from the cutscenes prior to the first fight, to the end video) were loosely mistranslated, they very few to do with the original feeling of the final.
The FF-XIII.net translation is far better and far more explicative.

I agree the story isn't the best thing about LO but it's certainly not the worst. It's more about the characters, dreams and music. It's quite an emotional experiance in places. I thought the VO and lip synching was brilliant.

WTF Tales of Phantasia has a better character then Yuri Lowell?!!!! LIES!!!!!! I don't believe. I don't want to believe you. I will NEVER EVER believe you!!!!

Anyways, PM me these plot twist that happened at the end of Tales of Pantasia since I never plan on playing it. I'm interested. I love great plot twists. To bad LO didn't have any :(

as others said, the dreams are part of the story so...

Also you do get some degree of attachement for the characters (well at least the initial 3)... and they are not 15 year old emo kids.... which does help. The overall script is also not as childish as most RPGs, so it felt very fresh to me.

(I do hate how I completely skipped a town (the one of those wierd Anubis looking guys) because the story just split my team and never let me go back...)
