as others said, the dreams are part of the story so...
Also you do get some degree of attachement for the characters (well at least the initial 3)... and they are not 15 year old emo kids.... which does help. The overall script is also not as childish as most RPGs, so it felt very fresh to me.
(I do hate how I completely skipped a town (the one of those wierd Anubis looking guys) because the story just split my team and never let me go back...)
