Forums - Sales Discussion - Filesharing/Downloading Not wrong, just illegal in some places

I believe that copyright laws are outdated, on the Internet, everything can be copied for free.

This is the Information Age, data is no longer a unique value, copying data is now part of the everyday life.

I think this article comes with an inherent problem when you post it on a gaming forum. It doesn't talk about gaming at all.

And I don't see how gaming benefits from it. I believe in the "If you haven't paid the price, you're not supposed to have it". Screw "potential lost sales", if you can't pay, you're not supposed to have it. And game companies don't have movie theaters or concerts to earn money from, they have their games and only that. What gaming does have, is several platforms that they can release their game on, and try to hit their demographics best.

You have Steam, PSN, XBLA, WW and both the DS and PSP that allow for smaller games to be developed and be succesfull, and you have the full fledged retail games that release for all hardware platforms.

The only thing I don't consider a problem, is borrowing out games to friends. I'm going to need that back, so it becomes more of a taster than anything else, in my experience at least.

Everything in this article concerns gaming.

Why is it not a problem when you borrow a game to your friends?

According to your logic to filesharing/downloading when you borrow a game to your friend your are preventing a sale for the developer and that is a lost sale, double standards?

Your friend maybe finishes the game and wont buy the original because you lent him the game or maybe he makes a back up of your original which would make you a partner in this so riddicioulous so called crime.

It concerns everything and everyone who ever dealt with piracy, but its focus is not on gaming. I think the move towards digital sales would have occured anyway, perhaps slightly slower if not for piracy, but not by much.

Double standards perhaps, but there is still a clear difference to me. One is sharing for the sake of sharing, while the other is sharing with someone who you have a personal relationship to, and thus serves to enhance or preserve said relationship.

I also know that the little sharing I do with my friends won't result in copies being made, as the only games I share these days are PS3 games.

Even it it is for PS3 you still may be contributing to a lost sale (I dont support this point of view, I am pro sharing)

Everything can be copied for free? If that was the case i'd have stacks and stacks of dvd's. Can everything legaly be copied for free.

I have Gamefly, so I can rent and play whatever I want whenever I want for just $17/month and I give nothing to the industry. Honestly Gamefly has prevented me from buying many games.

Thanks to Gamefly I have rented and completed:

Uncharted
Borderland
Modern Warfare 2
Ninja Blade
Dragon Age Origins
Street Fighter IV
House of the Dead Overkill
Little King's Story
Mario Power Tennis
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Prince of Persia

Soon to be added is:

Heavy Rain
God of War Collection
Uncharted 2

Maybe they should make it illegal since it is no different than me buying some games and then lending them out to those who don't buy them.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Actually I see renting the same way I see downloading.

If the game is good enough it will bring in new owners/gamers to the franchise and yes there will always be people just renting/downloading and not buying any games but all and all I think both are positives that the industry needs to embrace and accept the negatives that comes with it.

As do I. I see no problems with either of them.

I don't see why it is alright to lend out my games to whoever I want on the streets, at work, pretty much any random joe but if I stream it for any of these same people to view it all of a sudden it is wrong.

I totally agree.

I am from the old old generation that started with game & watch, vectrex, atari, spectrum and commodere 20&64 and since then we have been sharing and copying games wich has lead to us buying more games and it has been that way for most of my gaming community, we are all big time spenders in videogames and always have been even though we have had acces to the games for free for 30 years.

It has helped us to sort out games we wouldnt want to own, it has helped us playing games when our economy have been dire (always gone back and bought the games when we could afford it if it was good enough), it has saved us from damaging our originals etc.

there are so many benefits from this for a consumer perspective that it will never go away and those not embracing it will suffer from it.

I also can imagine that many of the veteran gamers are the ones downloading/sharing games so the Industry is effectvly alienating their best most loyal customers and the ones that have been supporting the industry the longest, it´s a real shame that they dont see this and focus on the downside of this.

I also believe that the vast majoroty of only downloading and never buying is the new generation that feels they are entitled to everything thay can get their hands on for free.

You CAN copy stacks of DVD, as in "you are able to".

Of course its wrong, it is very simple. It is not just a case of me lending to my few friends, it is a case of me giving to several thousand other people.

Let's say I buy Uncharted Drake's Fortune, then I lend it to a friend. I don't give him an extra copy, I give it to him for a short period of time, then he buys himself a copy because it is such a good game (that part is true).

Somebody has to pay for the artists to make money. The OP uses the idea that it allows new artists to be heard, but it doesn't allow them to get paid does it? Being heard might benefit the number of people who turn up to live events, but it won't directly put money in their pocket

Let's just look at the PSP, it would be a lot more successful, in terms of profitability, for Sony if people didn't download illegally. So what is happening there is Sony is making a loss because they don't get the royalties that they should, and so the people providing the services are suffering because they don't get the money from the people who are playing it. I don't care about the "they wouldn't actually buy it so they are no losing money," you can't seriously suggest that they are not losing any customers. Even though it may only be 1/5 people, they are still losing money.

I don't see why it is any different to stealing a CD from a shop other than the small price that it costs to actual make and transport those physical items
