    July 2014 NPD Thread! PS4: 187k, XBO: 131k, Wii U: 81k

in Sales Discussion on 14 August 2014

Mario Kart had some impact...but I think it's more along the lines of a big spike in week one, and then MK adding 5,000-8,000 a week to the Wii U baseline in the weeks after week one. The Wii U being bundled / "more of a value" proposition is a large part of why it's up this year vs. last year. Having more games always helps too....

So...that quote about X1 & PS4 being up 80% compared to X360 & PS3 in their first 9 months? Based on X1 and PS4 totals in months 1-8, and X360 & PS3 totals in months 1-9, we can say that PS4 & X1 combined to sell around 338,000 in July 2014, which is down from June in line with the transition from a five week month to a four week month.  My guess: PS4 - 213,000 X1 - 125,000...

I'm not really convinced Wii U got a bump from Mario Kart that lasted more than a week. It sold 140,000 in five weeks, not four for June, and 83,000 in July for four weeks, not five, so you're looking at 28,000 / week in June to 21,000 / week in July. June is when people graduate from school or college often times, and it's Father's Day, it's typically a bit better than July for everybody on a...

    It's interesting looking at the numbers excluding the Nov-Dec launches of Xbox One and PS4 - They're both trending well below PS2 / WIi, in 2014, including years we don't think of as strong for either - PS2 in 2001 - good year, but not spectacular or historic, Wii in 2007, 2010, 2011 - good years - not historic. I PS2 in H1 07 - 1.53m PS2 in H1 06 - 1.69m PS2 in H1 05 - 2.48m PS2 in H1 04 -...

Sony to Continue First and Third-Party PS3 Support as Long as “There is a Good Business”

in Sony Discussion on 30 June 2014

PS3 is just about dead - down by 1/2 over last year, fewer and fewer games, established franchises selling less and less even as the base is theoretically over 80m. We're at the point now where the typical PS3 owner is buying 0 to 2 games per year, and that will only shrink going foward at a more and more rapid pace. Based on the numbers to date for VGC only SW / HW (32m / 82m), going by the...

PS4 and Wii cross streams: Wii now ahead of PS4 at the same point in time

in Sales Discussion on 29 May 2014

You really should compare the launches by region - otherwise you include extra time in one region, too little in another and so on. That PS4 had a strong launch isn't surprising - as brands become more established year one fans become more and more dedicated. I've always worked on the assumption that the 9m people who bought PS3 with no games for $600 are the people buying PS4 now. NES hardly...

Did anyone predict Wii U to do this bad? If so, why?

in Nintendo Discussion on 27 May 2014

I thought it would do about 40m at most after playing with it at E3 2011. There was no reason to believe something so much less intuitive than Wii, with higher break even costs for publishers was going to be a mass market success. All the things that helped Wii (economics, intuitive design, marketing) were not apparent with the Wii U. The relative success in Japan (1.7m in Japan is like 5m in the...

Final Prediction for PS3 and Xbox 360 Total Lifetime Sales.

in Sales Discussion on 26 May 2014

    This is the last important year for PS3 & X360 globally. I don't think X360 is getting to 90m, probably 85m. PS3 is probably 50-50 for 90m, 40% for 91m, 32% for 92m, 26% for 93m, 20% for 94m, 16% for 95m, 13% for 96m, 10.5% for 97m, 9% for 98m, 7.5% for 99m, 6% for 100m, and ...

PS4 to lead all consoles with 51 million sold by 2016 - IDC

in Sales Discussion on 07 May 2014

This is going to be a weird generation. Even if the West grows, it looks like all the consoles are going to fail in Japan, so already you're out 10m-15m units globally just from that market (PS4 might get to 7-8m, Wii U might get to 4m, X1 maybe 1m, against ~13m / ~11m / ~2m for Wii, PS3, X360). I'm not convinced the West will grow for home consoles. PS4 and X1 could end up doing 70m or 80m...

I wonder if Sony and Microsoft are joining Nintendo now in gradually ramping down production (for an eventual total end) to PS3, X360 and Wii in all markets. If you look at the US and Japan, I'd say less than four million Wiis, PS3s, and X360s are to be sold from this point forward (<1m Japan, <3m US). The non-US/Japan/Western European world still pays $300-$400 for consoles, as opposed to...

It's not that it's doing worse, it's just that I think the PS4 may have the N64 pattern - huge launch relative to what it does lifetime. I remember my parents wanted to get me an N64 on day one, but with the stock issues it arrived in December 1996 not Sept 1996. Thing is, all the hardcore SNES people who weren't interested in PS1 were the people to buy it. After that, demand died off fairly...

Adjusting for the five week month in Jan 07 puts PS3 at about what PS2 did in January 2007, and Wii was doing about 350k if you make Jan 07 four weeks instead of five. I think the major problem this generation is an upgrade problem. Blu Ray + Better Graphics +Online + Move eventually made PS3 a pretty massive upgrade over PS2, Kinect + Better Online + Better Graphics eventually made X360 a...

in Sales Discussion on 13 February 2014

I know people don't like it when I say this, but I really think the X1 / PS4 figures for Nov-Dec 13' were largely fanboy effect driven - there were 10 million people or so willing to buy a X360 or PS3 for $500+ in 2005-2007, and adjusted for inflation that's more like $600+ in today's money. Those 10 million people willing to buy a system with hardly any games for a high price, based on potential...

in Sales Discussion on 13 February 2014

I've got about 41.6m lifetime for Wii in the US, 41.1m for X360 in the US. If the X360 really sold less than 50k and Wii sold less than 25k, all off the sudden it looks like X360 outselling Wii cumulatively in the US is off the table again. The margins will only shrink on average with time as both remnants of the long tail collapse. I really don't understand why people are so surprised with the...

It looks like people finally realized that Wii, PS3, and X360 have been out of date technologically and stale for game libraries since 2011 / 2012, and the market has corrected. The good old "long tail" is finally near it's end for the old systems....
