For the sake of transparency, I'll post the the email I sent to Brett to inform him of the situation and the PM conversation that followed:

Email to Brett:

Hey there Brett,

I have a particular case I'd like to bring to you. It's really something we haven't seen before.

I'm not sure if you know the user JayWood2010 on the VGC forums but he was a pretty active guy who went on to create the huge Xbox community thread.

We know that for sometime he's been building his own site. There's nothing wrong with that but his actions recently all point to him using the forums for his market research:

And then he started posting tons of news articles (from different sources) to raise his profile and today he started tagging his threads with his future site's tagline and logo:

"Welcome to the Realm of VIdeo Games https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/564527963018768384/xerT0T00_400x400.png" width="25" height="25">"

Something feels awfully wrong about this but before we do anything about it we'd like to know where you stand personally on the issue.

Thank you for your time!
Brett's reply :
Yes I feel this is totally unacceptable to be honest - he shouldn't be using VGChartz to promote his own site... please can we speak to the forum mods about it and have a word with him.

Brett
So following this I contacted JayWood, including ioi in the PM chain, here's the full conversation:
from TruckOSaurus, to ioiaxumbladeSmeagsJayWood2010 on 24 April 2015

Hey there Jay,

We noticed today that you started using your new site's logo and tagline with every news thread you create. While it's perfectly fine that you want to create your own site, using the VGC forums as a promotion platform is not.

So I would ask you to stop tagging your new threads with your logo and the phrase "Welcome to the realm of video games" in the future.

Thank you.

from JayWood2010 on 24 April 2015Everything im doing is within the guide lines. Not even advertising. I'm writing my own content and adding my own flare since you guys got all upset that i was posting a lot of threads.

You guys have become increasingly amusing. First you get upset nobody posts threads, then you get mad i post too many threads, and now you get mad i write my own stuff with my own signature which is no different than IGN, Gamespot, etc

truth is, VGC lives off news outlets, and people dont post on VGC. Nothing ive been doing has hurt VGC, in fact its given you all more news than you all have had for months thanks. But if you all want to create more problems that aren't problems, then go ahead. If its getting under your skin, then thats on you

------------------------------------------------------

from JayWood2010 on 24 April 2015Ok so now that I'm home i can further comment on this.

1. There is no Rule against what I'm doing, there for within the guidelines

2. There is no URL related to anything I'm doing. Just my own slogan on news that i write on and report on myself. All is my own content, I'm reporting on the news

So if youre going to ban me for writing this in the future you need to say so now, because as ive said, there is no rules on this and im not advertising. So before banning me, id like to know ahead of time considering these things. In fact id like to see how the mod note would look considering these facts. "Ugh banned for having your own slogan"

------------------------------------------

from TruckOSaurus on 24 April 2015You are right there are no rules about this highly unusual situation which is why we reached out to ioi before contacting you (and why he's included in this message chain).

Nobody is talking about banning you right now, we're just asking you to stop promoting your site (http://www.vgrealms.com/) when you re-post news from other media but as you said this is outside the confines of what the mod team should handle since the rules aren't defined in this area.

So I'll leave it up to ioi to communicate to you on this issue.

-------------------------------------------

from JayWood2010 on 24 April 2015First off i want to point out that Gamrconnect does the same thing by reporting on media outletshttp://www.vgchartz.com/article/258840/steam-roguelike-sale-kicks-off/

You are reporting on something that another media outlet reported on, so dont act like im doing anything differently.

And fair enough. If he wants me to stop using my own slogan that that has no URL to my own website then I will stop. I will respect ioi's wishes but only once i hear it from him. Until then I will continue.

---------------------------------------------

Hi all.

Yes, using VGChartz as a promotional platform for your own website is unacceptable and there is a clear difference between posting a range of news articles from a number of different sources for the good of the community and posting link after link to news that you have just re-posted on your own site for the purpose of sending traffic to it - one is reasonable and the other isn't!

Brett

----------------------------------------------

from JayWood2010 on 25 April 2015Now the question is, is this unacceptable? I wrote everything in this thread, added my own slogan, and added the source for my information. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=201897&page=1#

The headline is what Trucks is having problem with btw. Since i feel you are completely out of the loop I will explain.

Yes i am making a website that will not be finished for a long time. However, this website is nothing more than a URL at the moment (which i have never included).

As i said, i will respect your request, but i need to hear it from you first. Not something that people are telling you.

And PS. Mods, i'm very happy going back to my usual posting style. You guys know I included a sources in every article i posted and it saves me a lot of time frankly. You guys are trying to make this hard on me when i havent been doing anything wrong. This is why i disrespect you guys. You want to act as if a slogan is threatening to you when in fact it isnt. People dont follow a slogan, they follow a person and the quality.

------------------------------------------------------------

from TruckOSaurus on 25 April 2015Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the whole point of adding your slogan and logo is to establish your brand? Right now, your site is not ready so in the meantime you're on a pre-launch marketing campaign, getting your logo and tag known, giving it some recognition so that once the site is ready it's already familiar to VGC users who might want to migrate to your site.

To me that does sound like self-promotion.

----------------------------------------------------------

from JayWood2010 on 25 April 2015The reason i started doing that is because you all changed the rule about copying and pasting articles which was ironically put in place about the time i started posting threads like i use to before the eistence of Xbox Empire . So when writing it i decided to include my own flare to it letting everybody be aware that it wasnt a copy and paste. I dont mind not including it, but dont expect me to put the same effort into it when your own writers barely puts effort into their content and just takes news that forum members like myself finds for them.

As i said, you are creating a problem that doesnt exist. ioi clearly isnt in the loop on this whole subject as he thinks im linking people to my site for traffic which im not. Considering its only a URL with no launch date that would be kind of pointless.

And no, as i said before if people want to join my site "when" its up will be because the quality behind it, or because they know me and what i can bring to the table. Not because a few words "Welcome to The Realm of Video Games". There is a possibility that i may care about VGC more than you think. I get tired of how its run, but im here for the community because i actually like the community.

You act as if im attacking VGC. Ive spent 5 years on this site and care about it which is why ive argued with you all time after time. And for the last 3 years ive consistently been in the top 3 users every single month thanks to my contributions to this website, that is something you all cant say yourself. PS that was well before XBE.

In those 3 years ive created over 1200 hundred threads, and this month i have over 15,000 points which is over 7000 more than the 2nd most active user. Not to mention ive built up the xbox fanbases that was basically nonexistent on this website.

So for once, stop acting like ive come to this website to tear it down because its the complete opposite and im tired of the drama. I dont know why im getting under your skin this time but dont bother me with petty shit like this. I will stop since i prefer my old posting style more that saves me a lot of time, but i thought ioi at least some clarification rather than listening to accusations.

For the record ioi, thank you for creating this website. I truly do feel youve made a fantastic site and dont let the criticisms to you on the numbers hinder your feelings any. Whether im active on this site or not i will continue to come for the numbers you present. And i will strongly support your numbers on any site im on.
