If we're not counting re-releases then avengers won awhile ago. Everyone seems to forget that avatar released an extended version later in the year.

Of course it's not gonna beat Gone with the Wind. In those days going to the theatre was the only singleway to watch to the movie.
No Blu-ray, DVD, pirating, streaming. A lot of my cousins watched Endgame from a chinese cammed version of the movie mere days after release. That aint possible in 1977 with Star Wars, let alone Gone With the Wind.
Bet with Intrinsic:
The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Even in the 10 years since avatar released things have changed so much. Piracy is much bigger now, Netflix, Amazon and other streaming sites didn't exist, tv is providing more cinematic experiences than ever, social media wasn't big yet. It is just a completely different landscape than it was back then.

As well with this Avengers "rerelease" (it never left theater in my city so i never considered/felt it was a rerelease) it was a combined span of like 3 months? Whereas Avatar has been in theatres for almost a year? People say 'wait til Avatar gets a rerelease before the sequel', but my question is will Disney allow that? 1) First Avatar is tainted by Fox whereas Disney having Avengers Endgame to remain the top spot under their roof sounds better and 2) It's been so long that the sequel probably doesnt need people to understand the original Avatar. Just my thoughts. |
This exactly. It was still playing in almost 1,000 theaters when it added theaters back in. That's still a single continuous release. In the case of Avatar's Special Edition, Avatar's initial release was no longer playing in any theaters at all when the "Special Edition" released. For some reason, people like to point to the Endgame expansion as some sort of "cheap trick" for a movie that has been in theaters for 3 months to have beaten Avatar's 8 month total gross.

Sure, but then again, it wasnt trying to. It'd be completely unrealistic for any film to aspire to beat Gone with the Wind's adjusted numbers.
To be fair, using the facts...there are 5 films to break $2B, and 40 films to break $1B. (counting Far From Home)
Even if the Avatar sequels only did half of their original box office take, that's still over $1B folks. Say it slowly with me here...over. one. billion. dollars.
Top 40 Club. Congrats to Everyone!! Much respects all around.

Also (and maybe it's just me) but it seems like movies go from theater to TVstreaming service much quicker than they used to. I could see a lot of people choosing to just wait.

Endgame is out on home media in just 3 weeks. |
Wow that's unbelievable. I knew it seemed quicker but that is way way faster than even I thought it was. I had to google this because honestly I just thought you misread something or heard a rumor.

Thank you!!!!
In my mind there are only two charts that matter:
1) Worldwide, not adjusted for inflation
2) Domestic, adjusted for inflation
Currently, the first chart has Endgame at #1 and Avatar at #2 (though they are extremely close). This chart is a nice, objective, worldwide standard although it has the disadvantage of being weighted more toward recent movies.
The second chart has Avatar at #15 and Endgame at #16 while the top two spots are Gone With the Wind and Star Wars (Episode 4), respectively. The chart is nice in that it gives a good ranking for how a movie has done in the grand all-time scheme of things. It has to be domestic (US and Canada) though because A) if you go back far enough the movies didn't have much of a worldwide release, and B) every country has different rates of inflation and exchange rates. (I believe this is what the-pi-guy was talking about a couple of posts ago.) Because of these two factors, the only objective way to rank a movie for all time is to adjust for inflation but look at domestic only.
So, those are really the only two logical charts. Either you take one that is modern and worldwide or you take one that is domestic only but goes back to the beginning. So either Endgame is the top movie of all time or Gone With the Wind is. Avatar no longer has this crown any way you slice it.
