Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Is Unhappy About Surge in Short Term Switch Online Plans

Maybe, just maybe, 2 NES games a month isn't quite cutting it.

Not sure if this is the same article I read this morning but, from what I saw, they were planning to improve the service to get more people to subscribe. That's a good thing because in its current form, I don't want anything to do with their online service.

That's weird. It's more expensive to get the shorter plans.

If you only have one game you want to play and you're only going to play that game for a month, I can see it. I was tempted to get their online service for Smash. $4 or whatever vs $20.

That's the whole problem. Nintendo wants people to stick around for the long haul but, according to the article, people are opting to play a little now and never coming back. There just isn't the incentive to invest in a year, as cheap as it is. I'm far from poor but I see no value in their online offerings, yet--and I LOVE Nintendo!

Meanwhile I'm about to reach my 12th consecutive year with Xbox Live.

In its current state I won't even get a month sub. I sometimes even leave my ps plus for a few months based on what im playing. 1 month at a time is fine if you only play online every so often.

I like how Nintendo milks... first release NES mini to milk everything there is to milk out of that library and then release a subcription service offering free NES games..

Considering how cheap it was ($8 for the year on a fam plan) i'm MOSTLY happy with the service. This is the first smash bros i've been able to play consistently lag free. Every now and then i get a match that's a lag fest, but mostly it's a good experience. I think just expecting the company to cover the costs of online maintenance is silly. That being said i do have 2 major complaints (hence the previous MOSTLY); 1 party chat is handled horribly. Party chat is a fairly standard feature nowadays. I think even at the current pricing structure it is not unfair to expect it. 2 improved stability/matchmaking- as i said before my smash experience is mostly good, but why am i getting any laggy matches at all? if the connection is week between me and another player than why is that connection even a choice for matchmaking?
I don't care even a little bit about free games every month or the quality of those games, but the games i play online should be a completely positive experience. I will say i wish i played splatoon 2 so i could have that insight for this conversation, but smash is the only thing ive really played online. Well, warframe too, but that's free.

When they release the SNES games I'll be happy for that price (I did the year one). Currently I'm less than happy, but it's chicken fee so who cares? If they out 64 games on, I'll be very happy. If GameCube comes, I'll be flipping through the ceiling.

We waited this long for a service like this and the end result is nothing but dissapointing.
I was really looking forward to this but every time i think about buying the 12-month plan i ask myself "why?" Why bother when it's just NES games.

It's amazing how Nintendo didn't learn a lot from the Wii U days: their game development strategy was deeply flawed (very strong at first, very lacking after) to a point where they admit it was the reason to lower their forecast for the FY; after years of watching the competition make a lot of money of services like NSO, they came up with the worst possible solution: NES games... only.

The company that probably has the best and more broad catalogue in gaming, of the three, is the one that fails to live up to their legacy content.

"It is critical that these members want to continue using the service for a long time rather than letting it expire"

Kind of odd to hear from Nintendo but it sounds like they plan to join the "give everything an online mode" bandwagon.  Maybe some Mario "games as a service" experiences on the way?  A Zelda version of Sea of Thieves?  Probably more online games like Splatoon or ARMS on the way, as well.  Metroid Battle Royale?
