Hm, honestly 5 million.

Because NSMBWii had a nice public reception due to the over popular NSMB DS.

It was the return of a classic in home console form.

Being launched back in the Gamecube days would make it a good 2D effort but yet to be proven popular.

That's why I say 5 million, and that's a really nice figure for a 2D game in the Gamecube market.

2D platformers were proven massively popular over 20 years ago.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

Your logic fails, because if that had happened, NSMB DS wouldn't have sold because it "had to be popular". NSMB Wii would have sold regardless if NSMB DS was launched or not, although I think that Nintendo, after seeing the stelar sales of NSMB DS, noticed that dropping 2D Mario was their stupidest idea ever (even worse than the Virtual Boy), so they made NSMB Wii after it's portable prequel.

So has shooters.

That doesn't mean every shooter will sell good till it is proven to be popular. (The game itself, not the genre)

Well, I agree with it depends on the situation. Had New Super Mario Bros. released as a LAUNCH Gamecube title, GC would have sold a hell of a lot more than it did, and of course there would have been a large userbase so probably the 10-15 million range. However, just releasing in the middle of the cycle, 6.28-10 million.
