Your logic fails, because if that had happened, NSMB DS wouldn't have sold because it "had to be popular". NSMB Wii would have sold regardless if NSMB DS was launched or not, although I think that Nintendo, after seeing the stelar sales of NSMB DS, noticed that dropping 2D Mario was their stupidest idea ever (even worse than the Virtual Boy), so they made NSMB Wii after it's portable prequel.
