After having it explained to me many, many times I still fail to see, apart from a few extremely tenuous verses, where the bible condemns homosexuality.

I think that it is just a side agenda that has been adopted by some Catholics and they have tried to justify it with the bible.

It was the main reason God burnt Sodom and Gomorrah to the ground because of it according to the Bible.  The word sodomy comes from Sodom.

Men having sex with men and women having sex with women is considered a sin because it deals only with pleasures of the flesh and has nothing to do with procreation.

The Pope is entitled to his opinion just as much as homosexuals are entitled to theirs in my opinion.

I think that homosexual people have the right to do as they want and it doesn't bother me, but they shouldn't hold it against people that do find it to be "wrong" as long as they are not bashing them.

I thought Sodom and Gomorrah were burned down to the ground because of prostitution?

In fact here's an article on how the homosexuality thing is a misconception.

Eh, that's not really how it works no offense.

I doubt many catholics now have a "side agenda" about being gay.

Rather past "side agendas" lead into peoples problems now.

For example, priests not being able to marry or have sex.

People are against that now, even though it's not in the bible.

If anything it's likely do to the politcial ramifications of homosexuality in the past being ingrained into tradition.

In some ways tradition is religions worst enemy... it's like covering your hair in Islam.  Not mandatory at first, something that was done to show religious piety and eventually it evolved into something that had to be done.

Fair point Kasz.

I am not going to look it up, but I am 100% sure that it said that it angered God that men were having sex with boys and were prostituting THEM.

Like I said, I have no problem with a person being gay, but the Bible definitely has an opinion that's against it.

I thought Sodom and Gomorrah got burned down because they were just dicks in general to the point of where they gang raped random people.

I mean that was the story, angels show up, stay with lot... villiage people surround his house and want to rape them.

Lot gives offers his daughters up... and then they leave.

I guess offering his daughters to get raped could be seen as "Hey at least it's not dudes."  Though i think it had more to do with the old code that you should do everything in your power to prevent harm from coming to a traveler with whom you give lodgeing.

Well I mean if you want to interpret it that strictly, sure

People misinterpret sodom and gomorrha, though. It used to be that 'sodomy' didn't mean what it means now - the people of Sodom were absolutely depraved lunatics. They'd lay with each other, or children, or animals, or rape people in the street.

Great to see it's not ok for someone to call homosexuality a disease, but it's ok for people to call Catholicism one? Another fantastic example of the fantastic moderation we have here! Gotta love how the Catholics are about the only group in the world that people have free reign to attack and bash without anyone giving two flying craps.

The pope didn't promote aids in Africa either. Just another example of people taking stuff he says way out of context for the sole purpose of serving their own agenda or (this wouldn't happen mind you) bash Catholicism. Absolutely shocking.

The Pope DOES promote AIDS in Africa by not enouraging contraception. The impoverished nations in Africa need contraception just as badly as they need food.

This is not what the Catholic Church needs. They're going to have to think long and hard about who they want for Pope next time. Someone forward thinking, and preferably from the developing world, where most of the Catholics are anyway.

Sadly the Cardinals' College is quite out of touch, but there's nothing they can do to stop Benedict from saying stuff that's just going to discredit them further in Europe, so they just have to ride it out, and make a better decision next time.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

What else is expected from Catholicism?

OT: Homosexuality is certainly not a disease. And I doubt it is psychological. If it were pyschological, wouldn't there be far different interpretations of what is sexy? What I mean is that there are basically two things designated sexy in the world: men and women. If your sexuality can be pyschologically altered, why wouldn't people be having sex with telephone poles? Why would it only deviate to *just* those groups if it is apparently very fluid?

I don't understand why everyone is blasting the catholic church in this thread.

The catholic church thinks that homosexuality is wrong. When they are funding and running their own adoption service, I think they should be able to decide who they want to want to give the children up to.

Any secular adoption service can give children to gay couples, and that's fine - they aren't arguing that.
