Forums - Gaming - *Please explain RPG games for me*

I am sorry but I honestly have no idea what an RPG game is. I have a RPG game(Paper Mario 1,2, and 3) and don't understand what it is.

I know that Final Fantasy is a RPG but it looks to me like just an adventure game(I haven't played it) I have been to wikipedia and other websites but I don't get what it is. So...

What is a RPG and what is the difference between it and an adventure game?

3 main concepts of RPGs:

-Conversations
-Inventory
-Leveling

RPGs make you decide who you are and try to grip you in their universe.

Combat system is either turn-based or real-time.
If it's real time then gameplay is either familiar to a Shooter or Hack&Slash-like.
Turn-based makes it more like a Strategy game.

There RPGs for dummies :p.

Have you ever played dungeons and dragons?

If not, well, I'll try to explain.

RPGs are normally divided in two distinct parts: the exploration and battle.

You have to explore the world the game is set in, through towns, castles, deserts, caves, and along the way, you will find equipments that will improve your character. You can also buy other itens, rest, talk to other people in tows and among other places.

Then there is the battle. It will depend on the RPG, but most use the turn based system, where every character attacks in an order, may depend on his speed stats or other things, or either the action system, where you fight the enemies like in an action game.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Compared to adventure games, RPG offer much more control over your characters growth, often by leveling and equipment. One comparison a friend made once is take a sports game, the managing the team and players is the "RPG" part, the actual playing of the sport is the action/adventure part.

Currently own: PC (duh), SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP.

So in short... Almost any game you play could be an rpg

basically if a game has the following:

1. leveling up, character stats
2. gaining special equipment/powers
3. lots of characters and character development and conversation and story to tie everything together
4. lots of items (restore/increase HP, heal status ..etc)

then it's probably an RPG

it's chrono trigger (and a battle in turns)

You fight using a specific battle system. You hear a story. Walk to more fights and stories. You fight. Story. Walk. Fight. Story. Walk. Fight, fight, walk, story, walk, story, story, fight, fight,

In a pure sense, RPG is the type of game where a player takes the role of one or many characters and the story progress as the player's actions take place. The game takes place in a vast world (or universe) with diverse areas, cultures, people. The main purpose is to immerse the player making it feel like such world could exist.

The battle is a combination of strategy and management, because you may take control of one or many characters in battle and combat your foes. Other games add the element of "chance" in battle so things don't get too monotonous.

There is one big difference in Japanese RPG (JRPG) and Western ones (WRPG). The Japanese ones are character centric, where the characters you control change as the game progress. Meanwhile, the Western RPG are world centric, where the world and it's inhabitants change according to your actions.
