The PS3, in Japan, is $510 if I recall correctly, and if you can find it, $420 for the 20gb unit. The Wii, without wii sports, is $215 or so. A price drop would move more units than any game, regardless of what that game is. Anyway, if a miracle happens and Wii's still selling where it is in a year and PS3's still selling where it is in a year, that may be the point where it's too late. Not too late for #1 but too late for it to have a monopoly.

Raw numbers don't matter as much as profit. A game that sells, say, 300,000 copies can be more profitable than a game that sells, say, a million copies, depending on the development costs of each. And it's to Sony's disadvantage that development costs happen to be much higher on PSP and PS3 than DS and Wii.

Probably not, but given the PS3's sales that's not the key point. The real question Sony should have asked themselves 3 years ago is has a $500-600 system ever done well in a console race much less actually won? The answer to that is no. It's even worse for Sony since their heavy reliance on 3rd party means they need to be first or close to first to get the games that sell on their system to make a profit on selling their systems for a loss. But like Nintendo circa 1994 Sony got arrogant and started thinking they were the video game industry.

hey, Erik.... I love my wii. The wii controller is not the life-altering new gameplay mechanic (yet) that I was being told it was. About the PS3's performance,, I thought the 6 million goal by sony was consoles shipped not sold. and performance in your definition seems to be different from theirs. Sony has always said (even as the cell development was announced) that the PS3 was to be a powerhouse and that the PS3's active life should double. Before the price was announced I was calling it between 500 and 650 (before the 2 sku was known). Like a broken machine it was repeated that the PS3 was going to be expensive. I woud imagine sony would have enough wits about them to be relative... so if it was cheaper than the 360 they would have said so. I think Sony has a plan and the systems performance should fit into the companies plans (their the ones who have to support it) instead of a numbers race between bickering console afficionados. I am not worried about finding a game that sparks my interest with the Wii. Nintendo has never let me down, I am just disheartened because I fell into the hype trap and Zelda isn't as good as I expected. Fun but not on the level I had imposed upon it. No ones fault but my own though.

So Sony is now becoming Nintendo and pushing the console with their own games instead of 3rd parties now, eh? :)

Time will tell if the Wii is a fad, america is the most important and largest market, so wait until the March numbers, If they drop compared to last month, fad and it's slowing. If it goes up....thats sad. PS3 numbers need to be paid attention to also, if they go up over last month, and they will, the PS3 is fine.
