Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Metroid Other M be the Metroid to sell to mainstream gamers?

I'm praying this Metroid doesn't turn out as a disaster. You know if it's really good and sells extremely well, expect more Metroid goodness in the future soon. Possibly even more spinoffs that are also good.

other M would do good with zero suit samus since she is more agile and melee kinda like ninja gaiden

I don't think so.

Metroid has always been unique and only sells to Metroid fans. The only way that it would sell better is if it became a run and gun action FPS that focused most of it's gameplay on an extensive online portion in the game. You could level up your weapons and everything.

I'm really looking forward to it. I couldn't get into Metroid Prime because it was too much of a dark lonely experience; which I found very boring. I gave up on it after about 3-4 hours. I have never been fond of games like that. This game looks to be a far more interesting title.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I think Malmstrom said MOM is gonna fail and is a bad strategy by Nintendo.

What are "mainstream gamers" btw? Those who buy Mario or those who buy Assassin's Creed?

In context of MOM someone in between, i.e. rather those who bought MW2.

Nope. This game will be a disaster, mark my words.

If mainstream means Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto or Modern Warfare-like sales, then hell no!

I don't see Metroid: Other M selling that well, and I see it being sidelined by much of the Metroid fanbase. If it is to sell well, it has to sell more to an audience that hasn't bought Metroid before than it loses in it's core fans. Which is possible, Metroid Prime is not that big and it's in decline, but I don't see it selling as high as the first Metroid Prime.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Yeah, we're talking about what i call the "Red Ocean Casual" gamer, they're not like us, who are largely the "Hobbyist," and are really aware of stuff like this, they play the gamers' games, but only the mainstream ones. Moar cinema and ninja-gaiden-esque boss fights will help appeal to them, but can they appeal to them without abandoning the necessary Metroid elements entirely?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Yeah, exactly, I meant in the context of MOM. That sounds about right.

So, analogically we could say that the Metroid Prime games sold to the Assassin's Creed audience (being a HD guy I don't know what the corresponding game would be on Nintendo lol)? Meaning a crowd leaning more towards hardcore than mainstream.
