The question about "what is most overrated" I believe is close to the question I ask in the subject header.  So, rather than post yet another "overrated" thread question, let me tweak this a bit.  I am sure there are certain games and game franchises, which are popular, that you can't figure out why.  You wonder how a game that is so derivative, poorly done, or just apparently so boring to you, interests a large number of people.

So, which popular games and franchises are you perplexed as to why they are popular.

Myself, I would go with likely Grand Theft Auto and also Metal Gear Solid.  I am more stumped by GTA than I am Metal Gear Solid.  WIth Metal Gear, it is more of how anyone can say "Best EVA!" more than anything else.  As for Grand Theft Auto, I know the appeal of a sand box, but I don't get the appeal as to why anyone wants to be a psycho criminal and mow down innocent citizens.  It just isn't my thing, and I wonder what it is about human nature that drives people to want to do this. 

I likely have others, but they slip my mind now.

For me its Halo, I get its appeal from a game play perspective, but its story to me is so lack luster and boring, and feels like a huge rip off of starcraft.

How can an FPS that is so dumbed down, so slow, so simple, such shitty level design, such bad story, prosper? The only answer is that the consumers didn't know quality if it hit them in the face so they just lapped it up as the best thing ever, even if that thing was shit.

definitely Call Of Duty. I will never understand why this series is so popular. I mean wat is so special about this game that u have to wait in line at 12 midnight to get it??? The story is pure crap and the online play is nothing to brag about as MW2 copies and pastes from previous titles in the series(COD4). When i look at the sales for this game, it makes me cringe and i cant help thinking that there are soo much better games that deserve those sales a lot more. (ie. AC2, Uncharted 2, Demon souls etc).

I feel the same about GTA. How it can be so popular is beyond me.

World of Warcraft is another one. It's just so boring, how it can have gained such a huge following is something I really, really don't understand.

Halo, The gameplay is decent at best but the story is just meh.

WoW players boggle my mind too. Most people I talk to who play actually hate the game but only play for the social reasons.

Uncharted, Gears, Killzone, MGS, Mario, The Sims, WoW, and Crysis

Edit: Also God of War, Gran Tursimo, Forza, Bioshock, and Fallout

Call of Duty... I will never understand why people like it so much. If it fun, and good, but it's not great.

I think I hate it more than ever because of the CoD fans. They all want every FPS to be CoD-like, and won't even try anything that isn't CoD related.
