Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo is King

Nintendo was the biggest winner last year, outselling its rivals Sony and Microsoft.

Americans spent a record US$5.53 billion on video games last year, the most money ever in a single month, according to NPD Group

Hardware sales jumped 16% to US$2.19 billion. The Nintendo Wii sold 3.8 million units more than Sony and Microsoft's combined. It set a record for most gaming systems sold in a single month.

Last month, the PS3 sold 1.4 million units. The Xbox 360 came close with 1.3 million

Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros Wii was the top selling game last month followed by Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort. Activision's Call of Duty rounded up the top five, with the 360 version and the PS3 version coming in fourth and fifth place respectively

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox was 2009's best selling game but the year's big winner was Nintendo, which its games made up seven of the top ten games sold.

Actually, I think that the Wii has a broader consumer base than the other consoles, even senior citizens play it. Now with the Natal and the "Arc", maybe Sony and Microsoft have a chance

Yeah, right.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

It's all going to depend on what kind of games they use to push the hardware, and the quality of the games. If they simply make the same core games but just tack on motion controls, or make really shoddy "me too" casual games and falsely believing people will stupidly go for it, they are going to be in for a rude awakening.

I don't get why the 360 version is the best selling....
or is it USA only?

I agree whith Arius, the ps3 and 360 have a "mature" tag on them, the Wii has the all around appeal thats how its been marketed,Natal/Arc or not the Wii is the King, they wont affect Wii.

Casual games won't be enough in order to make Arc and Natal successful. They will need a HUGE and perfect (for the casual buyer) marketing just like Nintendo did with the Wii. What really attracted the casual buyers was the marketing and not just the games.

Also, the Wii has a very friendly design (I can't say the same thing about the PS3).
