Forums - Sony Discussion - So here's what I think of the PS3

Wow...

Ok Twestern, I can understand why the guy who constantly complains about every single aspect of the PS3 didn't like his initial impressions with it (because he's already decided that he hates it!), but I can't understand why the guy who constantly complains about every single aspect of the PS3 would buy one? you knew you'd hate it. You'd probably decided to hate it before it even came out. And I say "probably" instead of "definately" only because this site wasn't around at the time.

Believe, I only got the system because I really didn't have to pay anything for it, otherwise I would have never bothered.

Since I had to sell a large amount of my DVD's, I was left with one of three choices:

  1. Instead of getting about $450 credit, I get about $230 cash. This seems like a good idea since I could use it on whatever I wanted but I would feel like I'm getting even more screwed by getting even less for all those movies.
  2. Buy a large crappy selection of Wii, 360, and PS2 games. I considered this but the idea of having a PS3 that could have better games than those ones I already knew I didn't care about intrigued me.
  3. I could get the PS3. I didn't like it but since I told myself I could get one if I got it for free (or pretty close to it) it was worth it.

And hooray for grammar, though only a B?

Interesting, for somebody who spends lots of time looking at news and such on video games, you apparently never knew that the PS3 only came with composite cables?

I just honestly forgot and didn't remember until on my way home when Movie Trading Company, Target, and Gamestop were all closed and Walmart didn't have the cables.

Packaging: ? Why are you even reviewing this... I have yet to have a video game system Atari to the Wii that packaged the console, controller, extras, and cables that made 100% sense. There really wasnt worth reviewing honestly.

I mainly mentioned that because I'm still angry that it didn't come with proper cables. Sure, it's like $20-30 for the cables but that's beside the point. The PS3 is advertised everywhere as the uber gaming machine that will bring people into the HD world yet they only give you the standard cables.

PSN Store: Your only looking at 1 part of the PSN and yet your knocking the whole darn thing. Add some people to your friends list. My PSN is schnacky add me. The store is still not even a year old and they improved the overall search for demos/content that you might have missed. I went through and saw they broke things down even more. It will improve Xbox Live on the original Xbox sucked major the first 2 years it was out. Also download flOw and Calling All Cars for crying out loud.

All I can comment is on the PSN as I've seen it. So far, I just don't like how it's organized. As I play with it I might like it more but as it stands right now I just don't like how it works.

XMB (Cross-media bar): This I dont see how your knocking at all. Its the cleanest menu system for all 3 console and pretty easy to learn. Honestly it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to use the Dashboard for the 360 and another 15 to figure out how to get rid of it in-game. The Wii, the easiest of them all just isnt nice to look at. Boring white with blocks for each object/channel. For ease of use the Wii wins for cleanliness the XMB wins for me.

I do like how it's very clean but some of the tabs have almost nothing and then ones like the system tab have a crapload of options and each of those have more. Also, just the navigation of those just kind of bothers me, once again, personal preference.

The real meat and potatoes of my post was the games part anyways. The above complaints don't matter a lot in the grand schemes of things, it should be the games that make a game console shine (note-- I don't care if you call the PS3 a media center).

And looking forward to Folklore.

well you will be happy to know that more themes will be available for the XMB so lucky being able to change that stuff should make things less boring for you, maybe.

Dang ... that's probably the only way I am getting a PS3 at the moment ... and I am only getting the 60gb one - for the BC.

btw did you try and Blu-ray movies? if not I recommend ratatouille, 300, casino royale, and kingdom of heaven.

Wow, that was one of the worst reviews of any system I've read here.
I won't elaborate (Obviously nothing will change you mind), but in all honesty it was just plain biased, and not worth anyone's time.
You spoke some truth, the lack of HD cables is annoying/as well as short USB, and the PS Store (While not as bad as you make it out to be) does need plenty of work.

Oh, and I'm still confused people are trying to make the Uncharted demo look bad. It's alright for the PS3 to have a great game, seriously. I can see if you didn't enjoy it (Which is personal opinion, and totally understandable), but the complaints you listed were totally insignificant (You didn't like getting shot while in the middle of a melee fight? How's that a fault?).

Why should they include HDMI or Composite cables when 70% of NA doesn't own an HDTV? And that number is much higher in the EU. Unless they included two sets of cables, 70% of the population wouldn't be able to hook up the system.

Hell, even standalone HD DVD and Blu-Ray players don't come with component or HDMI in the box. The Toshiba A2's only come with RCA cables.

I'm have some coming through Netflix (forget which ones-- I know Ratatouille is somewhere on my list though). I'm not using the HDMI cables so don't think I can do upscaling for my DVD's (assume that's the case). I tried the different options and it still only played them in 480p (or 480i, don't remember, just remember the 480 part). -edit- Just looked at my queue, Ocean's Thirteen is my next BR movie.

Ditto, it's like somebody trying to convince me how amazing Halo is when I'm already bias against it. That isn't to say I wont play them of course as I have Halo on the PC and I've played through a bit of Halo 3, but I'm not going to care for it as much.

I think you can upscale without HDMI, but HDMI is required for 1080p (obviously) and some DVD protection thing (forget exactly what it was).

yea you need an HDMI cable to upscale DVDs but if you have component you can play BR Movies in 1080i (1080p maybe idk, my TV only does 720p/1080i)
