I think this thing is going to devastate kindle sales. Say what you want, Apple is going to market the hell out of this. I can't remember ever seeing a kindle commercial. In fact, I can't remember ever seeing any commercial for an ebook reader. I can see Apple pulling out the big guns for the Super Bowl.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

The thing that Kindle/Nook has on the iPad is that it they don't have near the amount of eye strain the iPad eBooks should have and the Nook battery lasts a good 10 days (assume the Kindle does too).

Kindles and Nooks both look like you're actually looking at paper so that glare, eyestrain, whatever just doesn't happen on those (or doesn't happen any more than a real book).

The iPad might boast a 10 hour battery life, but I doubt it actually lasts that long in actual use.  The Nook on the other hand, boasts a 10 day battery life that is true if you just read, it's probably more like 8-9 days actual use.

I thought the same thing about the Kindle and Nook but then after thinking about those two points alone I wasn't too worried for them.  I don't think I've ever seen a commercial for any eReader either but those things sell out as quickly as Wii's did in their prime.

Okay, I've read through some of the articles, I've looked at it a bit (already I know more than Apple's average consumer). What's so great about this? Seems like a gimped MacBook. Like, seriously. Does Apple really think that people will just buy anything they release in big numbers? Like Apple can yell, "HEY, A NEW PRODUCT FROM YOUR FAVORITE COMPANY, BUY IT!" Am I missing something here? And why is it that Apple can convince people to buy everything for ridiculous prices?

Alright, I'm done. Maybe someone can explain this whole thing to me.

It's Apple.  Yes.  No.  Mind-control beams.

So you liked it huh?

This is true, but I don't think the average consumer will see the difference. The kindle is not even in most stores and I rarely see the Sony one. The iPad is going to be the feature attraction and people are going to notice the bright shiny screen with pictures, not the dull grey screen with text. Also the consumer experience of buying new books is far more attactive on the iPad. The book covers are in full color, you can read review, and scrolll around through many selections. Trying to buy a book on the kindle is not that great of an experience.

I just don't know how Apple will advertise the iPad as an eReader though.  I'm sure they'll have the usual iPhone App store videos that show the eReader app, but I just don't see it taking away from the Kindle, Nook, or even Sony eReader.

I absolutely agree that the iPad is shinier than the usual eReaders, I just don't see it being sold as one.

Amazon advertises the Hell out of the Kindle and no other eReaders, Barnes and Noble advertises the Hell out of the Nook and no others, and Sony has portable stands in the middle of malls advertising the eReader.  The iPad will have the Apple store, Best Buy, and other electronic stores, but I'm not sure if people looking for eReaders will go to those places.

I don't think Best Buy or other electronic stores even sell eReaders other than the Sony one which is doing the worst of any of them.

I think just showing the eBook reader on TV is going to wow a lot of people. Seeing the pages move back and forth with the touch looks very fluid and smooth. That is enough to sell the device. It's fun to watch.

It isn't about the consumer that is looking for the ereaders. It's ALL about the consumers that haven't considered an ebook. That is where Apple will have a huge advantage by being able to show a bright shiny product that lets them read books, browse the web and watch videos. It's very easy to demonstrate all these things in a short commercial or quickly in a store. Remember, it's not about you, it's about the untapped audience that may not like laptops or computers but reads books, browses the web and watches tv. Apple can afford to buy Super Bowl spots and advertise it in a way other companies cannot.

Well, we can be sure that ebook readers of all sorts will stay more comfortable for long reading, as eink screens do their job and even have higher DPI. But Apple obviously is targeting a different fish here. Remember Jobs said that something like "people do not read nowadays" at the time Kindle was announced. So I think, with iPad, they are after rather casual readers and not bookworms.

So, +1 to Grimes.

Well, it seems better than 95% of netbooks anyways. So it's good I haven't pick up the one, not sure about price point for this "thing" though.

But IPS dispay on the other hand, mmmmmmm

I agree that it will wow people, I just don't think the iPad will take off.  The trendy douche's will buy it and it will be popular at release but beyond this, I don't see the iPad taking off so it shouldn't really be a problem for the Kindle and Nook.

the ipad is nothing more than a giant ipod touch
