Haven't finished reading everything, but probably one of the best threads I've read on vgchartz.

Maybe developers don't try harder on Wii because even poor games that Nintendo makes sell better than most games third parties make on the system regardless of quality. Look at the Top Ten Wii games according to Metacritic and compare their sales to the top 10 best selling games on Wii and their Metacritic scores.
It's not quality that sells the most on Wii because SMG has the highest Metacritic score of any game on Wii, yet it's not in the top five in sales. |
And yet it is still one of the best selling games this gen, go figure..
Does Pachter actually know anything about gaming? I say this because his assumptions of "hardcore" gaming appears to be titles like MW2 and its ilk. As far as i see it, although they have their "hardcore" players, i would say for the most part, these type of games are mainstream, maybe, even leaning towards "casual", especially given the advertising blitz they receive. What he should have asked was whether "blockbuster", high budget, high quality 3rd party games could be successful on the Wii, although we may never know the answer to this question as 3rd parties never release those on the Wii. I agree with the earlier post in this thread, saying that the COD's and GTA's of this gen are more mainstream than hardcore.

ANDY MURRAY:- GRAND SLAM WINNER!
In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

There hasn't been a similar pattern to this on any console in a long time. You don't see top rated games on 360 or PS3 being behind 7s, low 8s, and 5s in sales. |
Regardless the game will probably have sold 10 million when all is said and done, which is so damn good i dont think anyone should care what comes above or below that!
binary solo said: Isn't this basic marketing? Know your market and give them what they want. For the purposes of this discussion I'm assuming hardcore means a combination of M rated (and some T rated) games, and any game that requires a decent amount of controller co-ordintation. The question for the GAFfers is: would they (who don't have a Wii) buy a Wii if it had more "hardcore" games on it? Answer is probably that they get enough hardcore content from their PS3/360/PC so probably wouldn't buy a Wii to play the hardcore games that are only available on Wii. Seems to me the market isn't big enough for 4 consoles to play in the hardcore gaming market. Nintendo aren't massively competing for the attention of the hardcore gamer demographic. Seems they recognised right from the beginning that they would not outgun PS360 in that arena. Why 3rd parties are not learning from Nintendo's software strategy is the only real head scratcher in this. Having said that there is a hardcore niche dedicated to the Wii, and those folks deserve to continue to receive a steady flow (albeit probably not a flood) of hardcore content. But the gold on the Wii is in the casual demographic. |
what i don't understnad is this definition of hardcore gaming? they will basically say a true gamer that will play all the great games and a long time.
but how can you play all the great games if you don't own all the systems? shouldn't a requirement be for a hardcore game to own all 3 systems. Or at least the true hardcore gamer. i mean when you look at a hardcore sports fan they watch a bunch of sports and collect a ton of merchandise, go to a bucnh of games ect. If this person only watched say The Green Bay Packers and that's it, no matter how hardcore he is about green bay, that doesn't make him a hardcore sports fan. He is just a hardcore packer fan.
and in the same sense all these people who only own one system and seen as fanboys are just hardcore sony fans, or hardcore microsft fans, or nintendo. they are hardcore GAMERS. if they were they would have all the systems so that they can play any game that they want. And don't give me shit about no game on a system that you like. THere is not one single cosole ever that doesn't ahve a game that you wouldn't like on it.

They're not. Well, not in real value, but they are proportionately (again, due to different MSRPs). DS fees are a bit higher (versus PSP) due to manufacturing costs though. Bizarrely, I've also heard that UMD and PSN royalty fees are identical, which makes absolutely no sense to me (no manufacturing/inventory costs, just servers/bandwidth). :/ |
I've never seen anyone but you use this or "weirdly" before. Or at least, to start a sentence. Hrm, random, I know, but I find it funny...
@txrattlesnake:
You're looking at the wrong scores. Using Metacritic as a measurement for sales is a joke. Instead, people should pay attention to what the actual customers think - you know, the people buying the game? They're the ones that matter, the ones that determine sales.
See Just Dance for the latest example. Its metacritic is under 50, yet it gets outstanding user reviews. The game is showing some crazy legs, especially for a third party title. It's proof that it is worth making a game that people enjoy, whether the game is "casual" or not.
It proves how dumb Patcher is. Why would you ask a game message board how to sell a game. First, most of them won't have any business sense and I doubt most of them are successful at selling videogames. Also, most customers don't vocalize what they want. They will usually say "More for less." Lastly, NeoGAF is a "hardcore" gaming site, meaning the Wii is not their favorite console, so you think they will give a good answer.
