And why would they want to reincarnate a console that's success couldn't live up to its predecessor?
People who expect them to follow the revolution-evolution cycle, miss that it was not an intentional "rule", or "plan" at all. From the SNES to the Gamecube, they were only using sustaining innovations because they were unable to start a new revolution. Any evolutionary, or "sustaining innovation" console is already a failure in a certain sense, a failure at expanding the market, as they only appeal to a segment of their previous users, to those who want bigger, better, and more of the same. |
While I agree with your second statement, I disagree wholeheartedly in the SNES and N64 only "sustaining" innovation. The SNES innovated control + had some pretty powerful GFx for its time. The N64 innovated control A TON (nearly as much as the Wii, really) + added two players for the first time in popular gaming + did a ton graphically that had never been done before + was the true leader in the 3D revolution. It wasn't until the N64, after all, that the PS1 started getting legit, quality 3D titles.
The Gamecube, though, fits what you said entirely.
