Forums - Sony Discussion - MARKETING the Motion Controller is crucial to PS3's success

With Ape Escape behind it, PS Motion is a sure success.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Sony isn't a stupid company, they take quite a few risks, but that's what I love about the people there.

The Arc got delayed due to them likely having a lackluster launch line-up. I wouldn't accept that. I would want to have a great line-up of software when it launches.

I stopped reading the article when the guy asserted that the Xbox was a huge success after marking the Gamecube as a dismal failure. I get sick of reading articles or blog posts from people who understand less about the business of games than your average VGC poster.

Sony doesn't need to market their motion controller, they need to develop a killer app for it and market that. Arc/Gem/Wand/Dildo sales will follow after that. It can be killer for the 'cores,' killer for the 'casuals,' or killer for all gamers, but it has to be fresh and it has to be great or it won't even outperform the Eyetoy (which was a bigger success than most people give it credit for).

If I were Microsoft I would budget 1/2 to 2/3rds of a billion or about a years profit on massive advertisements and development support on top of any other advertising etc they were intending to do. I think its a battle which will be won by the $ more than anything else.

The question is, how much money can Sony budget to do the same?

Not necessarily. MS threw loads of cash at Japan advertising and got back what?

I know that is an extreme case but it shows you can't buy everything.

I am now gathering data on the European ad campaigns of each comapny.

So far MS are still doing more ads in europe than Sony and still can't outsell PS3 there.

But yes, more money spent on ads usually helps.

All sony needs to do is show the consumer that the PS eye can do basic natal stuff - or better still release a better PS eye, and that to better enjoy SOME motion sensing games you need a contoller...something I believe.

As I said before, Sony can get PS3 to do natal. MS can't release a controller for natal because they will be going back on their word about the promise of "no more controllers".

marketing does no good unless you have a killer ap like wii sports. If wii sports wasn't a great game it wouldn't have mattered how well they marketed it, the wii would have fizzled away. Even great marketing can only guarantee that you get people to try it and perhaps good initial sales, but the word of mouth and killer aps are what creates long term success.

You need to start with a product which is desirable in the first place for advertisement to make an ounce of difference. What I was talking about was their putting forward money to assist 3rd parties in developing and marketing their content rather than strictly marketing Natal on its own.

Btw Sony cannot just release a controller to do Natal, it'd take about 3 years of pure research and development for them to reach the same level as Natal in terms of software development. Microsoft has been developing Natal for years, Sony can't just whip something out of their back pocket which is similar.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

the thing is. i think people are (no i know there are) over hyping Natal, no one is hyping the Arc and so what? its just a gloified Wii and Natal is just a Eye Toy. we have seen it before

the thing is, when these companys go out there with them, people will thing thats how its controlled and thats it. if one fails it could bring the end of there system with it

I agree with this. Hope they learned their lesson well.

They've gotta figure out a way to make it seem more fun than the less precise Wii option. In one of my earliest posts, I told the true story of my mom seeing no difference between Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 (graphically) and my cousin seeing no improvement between Gears of War 1 and Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube). To a certain demographic, the fact that the PS3 is infinitely more powerful than the Wii doesn't mean a thing. Sony's been kicking ass and taking names as far as marketing, lately. I think they may be able to pull it off. It's going to be interesting to see how, though.

You know what, in view of what's happening the PS3 Fortress is indeed best Playstion yet.

Ken Kutaragi is a freaking genius. He retired with confidence on his PS3 baby.
