I always considered RTT and RTS as the same thing.
The only difference is that one has preset units and other doesn't.

But why are strategy games like Advance Wars and Valkyria Chronicles considered Strategy RPG's with more emphasis on the RPG and less emphasis on the Strategy? I'd figure they'd have more to do with this genre than the other. Oh well. I'm gone. Carry on. |
LOL!
As for your question I don't know, but I'm sure someone else took care of it.
i quite liked rise of nations

Wow, it looks that good! The graphics are incredible when you zoom in, with lots of detail ..even grass is swaying.
And such epic battles. What I wonder though, when the squads split you can see individial units fight... do these indibidual units have thier own AI, own hit points and so on? Or is it just cosmetics, and the battle outcome is calcuated on the squad level like it's always been in Total War?

Akvad, I read from your profile that you're 18 years old. Leave this issue to all of us who played games back in the 80's and 90's biatch! |
You are overthinking this. I am on officer in the military and know the difference between tactics and strategy, so I know what you are talking about. However, for all intents and purposes, Medieval II is a real-time strategy game. In fact, I have never heard of the genre Real-Time Tactics before now, and it seems just like a device for someone to sound smart.
Oh man - Total Annihilation for me all the way!
That AI was ahead of it's time, actually made the game difficult.
PS: I've loved pretty much all the RTS's at some point, and many have stolen hours of my life.. I'd hate to know how many...

I think they all have some simple AI. In some cases for example when you fortify buildings they need to get into positions(windows & such) and they do it individually. Another good example is when you make them run they might scatter and lose formation, because of fences and other stuff that is blocking their way. And word epic has been overused way too much already. Lets just say Total War battles are something very different.
Warcraft.
I didn't catch WC1, however I played the shit out of WC2 and its expansion. Then Warcraft 3 is still among my most played games. Just absolutely brilliant.
To anyone who hates the AI in RTSes and hates micromanagement, check out AI War Fleet Command. Fucking amazing is all I can say.
