The PlayStation 3 has now sold over 3 million units here in the UK.

That means there's been a significant leap of 800,000 units since July 2009, when the console had reached 2.2 million sales.

But there's still catching up to do, as early last December the Wii had sold six million units in the UK and, as of last July, the Xbox 360 had sold 3.9 million units.

Worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 are now at 27 million, according to Sony's business-time website.

Microsoft said at CES earlier this month that the Xbox 360 has passed 39 million sales worldwide, while the Wii has sold over 56 million units globally.

Man after such a rough year in 2008 and a spectular year in 2009.  I'm happy for PS3.  It's a bus moving at top speed with no brakes..it can't be stopped....

Eurogamer isn't stupid enough to know that the shipment numbers are old.. but I am sure they posted it for a reason.. after all without the 360 hardcore gaming would be dead (cough)

Hmm, the UK market is very strange: it's more pro 360 than the US and the price cut and a new SKU only allowed the PS3 to essentially match its numbers from 1 year ago (2% growth only). Whatever MSFT is doing in there should be repeated elsewhere in Europe.

The difference with the UK to most other places is that the PS3 is still the most expensive console. Example: In the US the 360 Elite and PS3 are the same price at $299, but here in the UK the Elite is RRP £199 and PS3 RRP £249. So thats a $82 advantage already for the 360 without even looking at the difference with the arcade which is £80 ($128)
