Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii HD is coming this year, says Pachter >_

Seeing the sort of leaks that surrounded the ps3 slim and psp go, I would expect at least something on that front if a Wii HD were really coming out this year. Keeping the full-fledged launch of a new console under wraps without leaks would be next to impossible.

So considering there has only been one "leak" apart from Patcher's insistence suggesting a new Wii this year ( http://www.maxconsole.net/?newsid=37744&mode=news ) I would still take the Wii HD / Wii 2 launching this year with a grain of salt. I wouldn't swear up and down that it's impossible though. We'll have to see what happens as the year progresses.

What if No More Heroes 2 gets higher reviews than any Wii series games on the Wii and only sells 500,000 copies compared to their10 to 20 million or more.  Doesn't that tell you that the Wii's primary audience prefers Wii series games to No More Heroes?

No, that would just prove that no one knows about the game.  Do you seriously think NMH2 is going to get anywhere near the advertising that Nintendo's 10+ million selling games get?  Not a chance.

Well....

Nintendo is what, a $40 billion dollar company now? They have a higher market cap than Sony, at $34 billion. I think we need to put aside the perception that Nintendo is a small time company. They are a big, powerful corporation that COULD launch their systems at a loss if they wanted to.

It's just that they do not see it financially feasible to do so. Their focus is on profits, not market share. And that's a focus that I completely agree with 100%.

They may be a 40 Billion company now, but they are a single division company unlike Sony and MS.    Both of them can afford to have one division in the red for a couple years as long as their other divisions are profitable.

If Nintendo were to take on the losses MS or Sony did/are it would put them out of business or at least make them a poor company to invest in, greatly reducing their value and cash flow.    If they absorbed losses for Wii and it failed, Nintendo could not recover.   It'd be game over.

Look, I'll make this clear for anybody who still believes Nintendo will release an HD Wii:

- IF Nintendo make an HD Wii, 3rd party developers can make HD games for it, no? However, those games would still be considered far inferior by fanboys and developers alike, because while it then may be in HD, Wii is still underpowered compared to PS360. A glorified HD GameCube, of sorts. (Of course Wii is more powerful than GC, but you get the point.) So games with inferior graphics, in HD. Core HD games will still not be ported from PS360 to Wii HD. it would be like porting PS2 games to N64.

- ALSO, releasing an HD Wii would effectively reduce the console's installed base from close to 70 million to zero. WHY would 3rd parties put big-effort, big-budget games on a console like that? They won't.

- Wii is the BEST SELLING console of this gen, the fastest selling videogame machine ever, and on track to be the best selling in history, ever. Nintendo's making the largest profits in their entire 120+ years of history, totally crushing both MS and Sony, and is actually one of the most successful and profitable companies on this planet, having completely altered an entire industry, with their competitors falling over themselves to get a piece of Nintendo's scraps. Ever since DS launched, Nintendo's story has been an insane rollercoaster-ride of profits and success. WHY would they spend millions, maybe billions, creating, launching and supporting an upgraded machine, when it's not necessary. In fact, the only ones screaming off rooftops that Nintendo NEEDS an HD Wii, are their competitor's fanboys and biased 'professionals' that would love nothing more than to see Nintendo fail.

- Finally, an HD Wii would effectively alienate the current installed base of the Wii. It would've been the same if Nintendo had released DSi with PSP-like horsepower, instead of keeping it down. Sure, they COULD have. But they didn't. And they won't.

And please, if there are any trolls reading this, don't bother coming up with some whining replies. Pachter's comments make no sense.

Thanks for ending this thread. ; )

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

yeah whatever you say :P

I can't help but think that when Nintendo eventually releases their next console, which of course will be HD, Pachter will shout "I told you so!"

It means a Wii 2, a new console. Look at these quotes from the article I linked before:

"We would expect publishers to support such a move, given that the cost of porting an Xbox 360 game to the new Wii Plus HD format would likely be lower than the cost of building a ground up Wii game (we estimate under $5 million)."

"Should Nintendo be able to convince publishers like EA and Take-Two that the Wii Plus should be supported by the entire EA Sports catalog and by the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, it should be in a position to successfully convince consumers that the Wii Plus is the last console they will ever need to purchase," Pachter said.

Since he's talking about games specifically developed with the new console in mind, it can't be fully compatible with the Wii...

So, should I hold off on getting a Wii and wait for this? I'm waiting anyway since I will only buy it when they bring the Black Wii to NA.

Considering it doesn't exist, I'd say no I wouldn't...
