I would just like to point out that this thread was not made for the sake of seeing who is better. I know that's what every thread breaks down into as people get defensive for the console(I am guilty at times as well) but comparing sales just to give a company a pat on the back or a fist pump is not the point of this thread. It would be nice if people could look at the different company's strategies and game releases and console situations without bias and try to bring something to the discussion of WHY game sales on each console are the way they are. Not who is better.
it's interesting, ps3 has 3 games that sold 5 million, none of them are first party. They have 4 first party games that have sold over 3 million but they have all had a certain amount of bundling. If it wasn't for bundling it would probably only be 2. Sony has been around for quite a while now, they should be able to come up with a few big franchises.

they have halo and gears, but they also don't have as long of a history in consoles, and certainly not as much of a history of success.

@Johnsobas
I said "MS franchise" not from a 3rd party.....
Well with my experience it is one of a few things....
non Hardcore PS3 gamers do not know what they should buy. Many PS3 exclusives do not get the advertising as do many 360 games. All they know is what their 360 owning friends tell them is good, ala Call of Duty. So they end up only contributing to the MP games for they don't even know there are so many great exclusive alternatives.
There is some sort of weird fear of buying a game that 360 owners don't play. Don't ask me why but I have seen it many times where I work.
Also PS3 Exclusives stay expensive for long periods of time. They don't depreciate in value as quickly because bluray virtually unscratchable and people don't bring the games back as often. 360 games depreciate in value rather quickly so they become cheaper for the consumer to get and then carry over via word of mouth.
Stigma of "PS3 has no Games" lives on....
PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)
Sony games dont sell cause "SONY GAMES SUCK"!!! They may be nice to look at and almost tolerble to play but the sales never get there unless Sony packs the game in with the system (bundles) or Sony title games get marked down. Sony better start thinking long term. This gen in console and game sales only shows that not everything is that simple or handed to you just cause you add a different number at the end of the game title. Sony Has a "GREAT" system!! To bad they'er going to under use it.......
The answer is far more simple than most people seem to think. To create a game that sells over 5 million you must accomplish one of two very difficult feats. You either make a game with a ridiculously broad base of consumer.
Sony franchises do not typically go for universal appeal. The two that I can think of that have tried recently would be Ratchet and Clank, or Little Big Planet. Neither were quite broad enough for various reasons that I don't care to discuss.
The best in the genre, or market is a problem of competition. They have extremely good third party support. Consequently many games they have fail to become the best experience in the eyes of the consumer. This splits some sales between the two games, with the percieved better one getting the lion's share.
All of the above statements are meant to reflect the situation at this very moment. I am not saying none of the games currently released won't, or can't make it. Simply that they have not yet. Any and all analysis and opinions offered could be very different in the future.
OMG @mightyERon post
WTF is this shit?
"Sony game sucks"?? yeh thats why a Sony game pretty much took all of GOTY awards this year.
"Sony better start thinking long term. This gen in console and game sales only shows that not everything is that simple or handed to you just cause you add a different number at the end of the game title"
you mean like Left 4 dead 1.5? Or Gears 1.3? Or halo reharsh AKA ODST? or Mario (insert olympic sumthing 3) give me a break.
Because Sony didn't release it's Halo/Mario game yet (Gran Turismo 5)
