Forums - Sony - PS3 Selling Three Times as Fast, says Sony CEO

What I didn't understand yet is how their shipment target magically changed from 11 million to 10 million without that being mentioned in their latest financial report.

Doesn't matter much though, that still won't happen (it would imply around 12-13 million consoles sold to consumers by the end of March 2008 - or 13-14 million with the old forecast).

Sony's Fiscal year ends at the end of March 2008.   It's not too far out of line to believe that they could hit or come pretty close to that number by then.   I think that this Holiday season will go very well for Sony with the PS3, and the momentum will continue with some highly anticipated titles releasing in Q1 of 2008.

In my post which you quoted, I specifically said what this forecast would imply for 31st of March 2008. Do you think it will happen?

I do believe that Sony could come very close (maybe even slightly over) to hitting the 10 million mark by the end of March 08.

The momentum already slowed. He's quoting the past, and trying to create some hope for Sony investors.

And you wanted him to talk about future sales, right?

Nope, I want him to talk about present sales with the most recent available data.  At present, the PS3's sales have slowed.  He took a snapshot from just after the price cut, ignored more recent data, and extrapolated the old data to suggest something that the current data contradicts.

Obviously, it's misleading.  He knows this.  But he can reasonably say "old data said this it's all I had" even if that's not true.

Diomedes, you have been talked to many times about taking numbers from anywhere but reality. Where's the proof that sales would spike 30% for the rest of Europe? Just what would drive those sales so much a couple weeks after the price cut had already taken place? Not to mention that even if these kind of sales did happen, total sales for the week would still not be greater than those of the Wii. Why you ask? Because we have a 40 k gap in hardware units, and outside of France and Spain the PS3 has sales numbers at 3-7k per week giving effectively a rise of 900 units- 2,1k units increase should the 30% thing actually have place. Roughly counting the PS3 raked up a bonus 10k trailing behind Wii numbers by 30k overall. So nice try but no dice.

And stop with the " you're a fanboy that can't take ps3 sales". That is like a 16 year old talking. No one said a bad thing here about bigger ps3 sales, we only say that Stringers' sales spin is petty BS. He didn't say anything solid. End of story.

Are you doing it on purpose or did you really NOT read what I wrote? Sony is not forecasting a total of 10 million sold to consumers (nor to retailers) by that time.

If you look at what Just Ben quoted in the first post, it didn't say anything about 10 million for just this fiscal year, but I got that they stated that the total sales would be 10 million or close to that from launch to date.

It's stated in their most recent financial report that Sony plans on selling 11 million PS3s for the fiscal year. If Stringer meant 10 million LTD by March 2008, then Sony is in BIG trouble.

Forecasts made in financial reports are always made for the fiscal year. In their last financial report they reaffirmed it (except it was 11 million). If you have any proof that they've changed it to 10 million overall (or in other words, including the 3.6 million shipped-to-retailers from the other fiscal year), that'd be huge news since it would amount to a 4.6 million downgrading of their previous forecasts.

Guys ,the PS3 is selling more than the X360 since launch in Europe .Thats facts ,no matter what teh data for others show in this page .In fact when ioi gets new data he usually has to do some changes as recently with the France and Spain numbers growing those a 30% ...and probably this happens in all Europe .If you assigned those sales to the correspondant weeks you would see a clear scenario of the PS3 outselling the 360 and probably even the Wii the last weeks .I dont know the rest of Europe but the PS3 in my country since the price drop and 40Gb models is outsold or with 1-2 units in most stores while there are tons of Wiis and 360 out there .

Stop with the "sony lies " thing .Sony cant lie to its shareholders because the directives can be put apart if the shareholders receive news that contradict what Stringer told them .And with people as Gfk mesuring the sales over all the Pal area and releasing them as soon as december/january as they usually do lying is a nonsense short-lived .

But I see you prefer the fanboyish "Sony is lying " to some actual facts as the PS3 selling much more since the price drop .Whatever ,the people will still have the console in their homes even if you dont believe it .

Well, "Total Others" data we have is the least accurate out of the three regions, and does get adjusted when we have more accrate data, but being that all three companies recently announced their shipment numbers the "Total Others" numbers are pretty accurate at the moment.

Now, if you look at the past 6 months the PS3 has outsold the XBox 360 by (roughly) 150,000 units in the "Total Others" region which means that if Sony can keep up this "dominance" for more than 3 years they will catch up with the 360 in sales; in the same timeframe the Wii has outsold both consoles by well over 1 Million units which makes it increasingly implausable that the PS3 will even approach the sales of the Wii.
