Forums - Sony Discussion - God of War III to run on 720p natively with variable frame rate.

regardless if its 720p or 1080p. if the game looks great and plays great. those number won't mean anything.

don't judge a game by its "native" resolution.

Pffff i thought this was going to be 1080.... and I thought that the true HD console was already among us. Sony didn't deliver. Oh well, as long as the game is as good as the other 2, I'm happy

You haven't even played the game and already have this prejudgment? It still upscales to 1080p and still holds 60fps throughout the majority of the experience. I swear, some of you are never satisfied.

OT: From what we're hearing, the game has no visual equal. If native 720p means a higher detail/texture quality, I'm all for it.

Dude, chill. Sony promised that the ps3 would run games in 1080p (where are they?). They said that the ps3 was gonna be the true HD console. They also said GoW was gonna run in 1080p, not 720.

I don't need to play the game, to know that they promise something and they didn't deliver. Chill out man

GT5p
Disgaea3
Numerous PSN titles such as Tekken5DR

Off the top of my head.

4 ≈ One

If they promised that GoW III was gonna be 1080p native, and at the end it is 720p native... how do you call that? I call it, don't deliver.

And we should wait about the GT5 being 1080p, b/c that's what they said about GoWIII

Either way, it doesn't matter... if the game is as good as 1 & 2, i could care less about 1080p x)

As for the comment before...are those games 1080p native?

i guess i wont be buying it then.

Id rather have 720p and 60fps than 1080p and a choppy framerate

So long as they dodge the dreaded screen tear that seem to plague a lot of games these days I dont think there is too much of a problem.

Afaik, Lair, GT5, Sacred 2, and lots of PSN games run at 1080p natively.  Its not common, but it does happen for games that don't rely upon a lot of overdraw, and thus have the fillrate to spare.  I actually think Lair should have run at 720p, personally -- 1080p was pushing it for all the stuff that was going on in that game.

There are no X360 games that do the same, thanks to the 10MB eDRAM framebuffer, I think.  The X360 instead upscales to 1080p in all cases (which the PS3 does, if its not native as well).  So by comparison, the PS3 does a fine job of supporting 1080p.  The X360 doesn't really support it at all, beyond the bare minimum of upscaling.

More on topic: 720p reduces the GPU memory needed for framebuffers and every rendering stage along the way.  That means more memory for textures, as well as a better framerate.  Sounds good to me.

Do you know who promised that the game will have 1080p @ 60 FPS with Sixaxis and DualShock support? The God of War II director Cory Barlog which he left the company a few months after God of War II release. So what I am saying here is, don't accuse Sony entirely for not delivering, it was probably a premature announcement by him as the actual game wasn't even in development at that time, and him not working on the project anymore would make that claim even more irrelevant.

Here, this is what he said back in March 2007...

"If we were to do a God of War III on Wii--I mean PS3," Barlog told the enthusiastic crowd. "We're excited about the potential--maybe, no commitment, no announcement or anything like that--to maybe have [God of War II hero] Kratos in 1080p with the Sixaxis and the vibration. Vibration [is] coming back to the PS3, that's pretty cool, huh?" (Emphasis added.)

oh no, I'm accusing sony b/c they said that with the ps3 the "true HD era would begin" And that they were going to be lotz and lotz of games running at the "true HD resolution" (1080p) but we all know that was just BS.

And I also hope shokenchi is kidding x)

I'm pretty sure this was a move expected by almost everyone that knows a thing or two about current HD consoles.

But I think this doesn't matters a lot right now. It could be 480p, 720p or 1080p, if it's a great, fun, and polished game made with effort, it doesn't matters... right? ;)

But I'm the only one that would've preferred locked 30 fps instead of variable? I notice framerate changes, and they annoy me. That's why I play with vertical sync turned on most of the time.
