Forums - Gaming Discussion - The new generation of gamers are scary!

Wow. All the work on "immersion", and people don't care.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

The best game moments are unscripted and happen in MP. No one cares what you've done in SP except maybe when you show off a high score or a video, or do something extraordinary like a speedrun but that happens to have an online MP component too, since the fun is comparing and competing with your friends and others.

Definitely agree with this. Lots of "ohshit" moments when playing a good multiplayer game with friends. Things stay exciting and unpredictable. SP's in a game are comparable to movies - they're great the first few times but lose value extremely fast.

And like he said, scores/trophies/etc in SP don't have as much merit as the ones in MP do.

I totally agree with the OP. New generations don't value the power of story-telling that videogames have.

I think it's been this way for a long time. The thing is back then, SP was pretty much the only option there was till splitscreen came along. Humans are naturally social. With internet becoming more and more common, it should be expected that online play is improving and becoming more mainstream.

SP are boring in general, why play SP when we see the same thing every time.

i hope that was a joke

What exacly changes? Nowadays devs are trying so hard to create that "cinematic experience" that games are becoming so linear.

SP is predictable. You pretty much know where everything is gonna spawn. In the end, you know you're always gonna win.

You win in MP through team effort. In SP, your team is there only to make things more interesting/exciting by firing off random shots that rarely kill.

I see this everyday at school too, almost every kid I know only buys games for multiplayer and say single player games suck and are a waste of money. The most they do is rent a SP game or borrow it from a friend. When they get games like MW2 and KZ2, they don't EVER play the SP campaign and immediately start MP. It annoys the hell outta me. I use to think its because they were 360 owners and only liked FPS's, but lately my PS3 friends have started the same trend....

Is being social a bad thing now? I love that MP is becoming much more dominant now that online technology is becoming better. I have about 3-4 friends that come over to play MW2 online and we always have a blast. Funny shit happens. A match can also be extremely fun when you got multiple on mics working together.

Besides that, alot of online shooters are adopting a leveling system to reward players and keep them playing.

Im glad im not the only person on here that prefers MP > SP.

Why dont i like SP? Well you basically answered it.

  • The player is the only person doing something, feels more like a job than a game. If you watch your AI team mates in CoD they just shoot and always miss, you can sit there for hours and nothing will happen. So much for a "real war" experience.

  • The game is so predictable when i was in the Humvee in CoD mw2 i knew we were gonna be ambushed,i knew that we would barely make it out, i knew what was gonna happen. This is like trying to get into a movie you already saw.

This has been the trend for ages now. It started with games like Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena. Now consoles are becomming more online oriented it's happening with them too. It has a lot to do with the popularity of the FPS genre which will eventually die down due to oversaturation. It is a little annoying that the SP component of a lot of games is now seemingly pushed aside and shortened. There are still good SP games out there though:

Bioshock
Half-Life + Episodes
Portal
Mass Effect
Uncharted 2
Assassins Creed 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Metal Gear Solid 4

If people like multiplayer then fair enough. I do pity them (those who only play MP) though, as they won't get to experience some of the brilliance of the SP of the games above. One trend that's definately been a bonus this gen though is the addition of co-op campaign modes. It's a lot more fun playing through the campaign with friends than on your own.

You see the same in Halo 3. Happens a lot when I play with someone who is only 'enlisted for duty'. While he has experience points above 200.

I just wanted to throw in my worthless, newbie to this forum, two cents... I think the problem with SP games nowadays is the lack of creativity being put forward. Its all about "how pretty everything looks" now rather than how good the story and characters are. Too much money put into the art instead of the writing.

Also... because I kept seeing people comment on how "good" the single player CoD4 is. I rarely play much MP nowadays and i LOVE shooters -- but holy hell, I could barely finish CoD4 because it was so incredible linear and insanely boring. There was absolutely NO story present -- it was all "ok now you are THIS soldier... and you are in THIS country... fighting THIS badguy!!"... repeat, repeat, repeat... game over. The single most overrated game I have played in YEARS.

I agree with the first paragraph. I've almost lost complete hope of a deep and involving story with multiple options in the style of Deus Ex. The only game FPS in recent years that I actually cared about the character and story in SP in Half-Life 2 + episodes.

In regards to CoD4, I thought that whilst linear and lacking in story, the campaign relied more on impressive and shocking set-pieces for immersion. I thought the segement where you see the perspective of the President before getting shot and the nuke were very well done and the sniper level (leading up to the assasination) was superb.

western developers sp it's actually boring.

they try to do adult themes , take off ABC NBC any TV, to games.

Man this is sad indeed, The story line in games is the most important part, its what takes games so long to be made, I never play online untill i complete the story line

I think MAG picked up on this which is why it only has an online feature

I blame the Wii !
