Forums - Gaming Discussion - The new generation of gamers are scary!

Meh. SP mode in FPS games have sucked for a while. I don't even remember playing more than a little way through almost every FPS Ive ever owned in the last 15 years with the exception being the Halo and Gears of War series.

And I don't miss it. The beauty of Golden Eye was its MP mode. We've had online MP mode on the console for a while now which makes MP mode even better and completely overshadows all but the best SP mode.

I totally agree with the OP. New generations don't value the power of story-telling that videogames have.

The best game moments are unscripted and happen in MP. No one cares what you've done in SP except maybe when you show off a high score or a video, or do something extraordinary like a speedrun but that happens to have an online MP component too, since the fun is comparing and competing with your friends and others.

SP will always be there, but will probably be even more niche as things move online. MP is good, it brings gaming more into the mainstream instead of the solitary, reclusive gaming nerd.

CoD4 SP > Uncharted 2 SP IMO

although that's slightly off topic now.

And yeah only playing multiplayer is a waste and a shame. MP is soulless and can be done by almost everyone, but creating a good story with deep characters filled with astounding music and good voice actors is the hard part of a game.
That's art. MP is not art.

This is complete nonsense.

Most of my favorite games, are so due to the multiplayer. Games like:

RTS games (Starcraft / Warcraft)
Fighting games (Street Fighter, Smash Bros, Soul Calibur)
Racing games (Mario Kart)
Shooters (Counter-Strike)

Are you going to tell me this "can be done by almost everyone?" That's bullshit.

I buy FPS for the multiplayer, because the campaigns are simply not fun, and have felt the same for decades. I may as well play Counter-Strike against bots. dharh said it best. Hell I couldn't even get my bro to finish the Halo 3 campaign with me, and he's somewhat of an achievement whore (I only play FPS campaigns with co-op).

The single player games that had its main draw in story, music, and immersion were always outnumbered by people who are drawn in by gameplay. This is nothing new. The only difference is, gameplay (like multiplayer FPS) has finally been put in the spotlight thanks to AAA games holding it up as the focus. I'm not saying I don't enjoy story driven games, but it doesn't deserve the exclusive attention of every great developer out there.

Games like RPG's aren't going anywhere, anyway, so there's nothing to worry about.

There are tons of great multiplayer mods available (Desert Combat, Counter-Strike, Garry's Mod, NEOTOKYO°, Galactic Warfare and many more), but immersive singleplayer mods are very rare.

So yeah it's easier to make a proper MP game. The only critical thing is the balance, but that's it.

I'd argue about the quality of those mods. Counter-Strike is really the only mod that was so amazing, it broke into the mainstream (and justified tons of Half-Life purchases). Does anybody pay money for the others you listed?

It's obvious that it takes more resources and people to make an immersive single player game. That doesn't mean it takes any more talent. It's like saying books are not art, because they're easier to make than a movie. There are far more great books, right?

Yeah i hope this problem gets fixed.

IMO most campaigns in FPS's are boring. The FPS genre hit a wall several years ago and has come up with nothing new other than HD skins. The only redeeming quality for most FPS's to me is the multiplayer.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

How lovely. So those are my only choices? Either I'm a sports jock who only does stuff to show off to his friends/strangers on the internet so he can feel better about his penis size... or I'm a reclusive solitary gaming nerd?
