Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are you happy with the direction of the videogame industry

Is gaming journalism included in this? If so, I like the overall direction of the video gaming industry except for the following:

- What gaming journalism has become ( Too much personal opinion mixed in with the facts)

- Motion controls (Wii, Natal, PS Wand)

- over-saturation of shooters

- Too much anger over videogames (It can get really weird)

Yes.

No.. I hate Blockbuster Movie style games, I hate too long development times, not enough Genre variation, FPS over saturation

Overall, very much. The DD networks has allowed 2d gaming to flourish once again, Wii has brought gaming to the masses, DS is the best handheld ever and the HD consoles and PC keep giving us those blockbuster games. Not everything is perfect, especially the DLC hell, but overall it's very good.

Not really. I think both sides of the video game world have been huge disappointments.

Wii side: 0 90+ rated AAA (non-Nintendo) games out for the system. No I'm not freaking out so much about the total lack of AAA games as much as it worries me that, to date, not a single company outside of Nintendo has gotten it right.

That speaks volumes about the lack of creativity in the video game industry, that it would be so horribly low or that executives are so vehemently risk averse. Any way you slice it's most definitely not a good or healthy thing.

HD Side: I'm not happy about the fact that outside of a few exceptions, this whole generation could be done on a last generation machine minus graphics. That in spite of all that power there's been so few games that really harness it besides giving everything a HD spit-polish.

Both sides point to the same problem: the industry as a whole is spinning their wheels. This is especially evident in the overwhelming amount of paintjob sequels that this generation has produced. Overall this generation has been a huge disappointment, and while there have been a few exceptions like good motion controlled games and Dead Rising, they're so few and far between it just accents the problem.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there was another crash.

i hate how the video game industry is turning into a media centre

No I am not. I don't like how development costs have skyrocketed, and how developers continuously push games to be more like movies instead of more like games. The industry IMO is turning more inward instead of branching out to get more people into gaming.

No, I am extremely unhappy.
-Too much focus on graphics, physics etc and less focus on the fun factor. I am afraid that my son won't be able to understand what videogame really is (just like the most part of the players nowadays).
-Big manifestation of flamewar and fanboyism.
-A lot of lies and bullshit (game x can't run on y console, game x is the best bla bla bla)
