Forums - Sony - Sony CEO sees stalemate with HD-DVD

Your right, but I think that the PS3 will get at 360 this week. Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, and a few others came out. I think that will boost sales enough to stay ahead of 360.

Have you been looking at the charts at all? Rachet has clanked, it hasn't even sold 150K after 2 Weeks. As for CoD4, haven't you realized that 3rd parties sell better on the box!

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

i am curious when did the ps3 outsell the wii in europe?

You have to give it to Stringer those are rather honest statements on Stringers part about the format wars. Any other Sony Exec would have sounded like a broken record. Further more they would blow so much smoke that it would make a forest fire seem like a fart in the wind. Hearing things like this is quite refreshing.

We have all know what he said to be true for quite some time. The formats are in stalemate. One is sneaking into the market through the back door. The other is coming in through the wallet. Since they are not competing in the same way its hard to draw a straight comparison.

I have actually come to expect comments like this from Stringer. He has never come off as a foaming at the mouth PS3 or BluRay supporter. I think he is sincere about not liking what they did before he arrived. Unfortunately for him its not like the investors would have let him scrub both products. So he has to watch helplessly as they have to go their coarse.

Placing the BluRay player in the PS3 was strategically the worst move possible. They turned a one front war into a two front war. They doubled their enemies in an attempt to defeat one enemy. Historically fighting a war on two fronts has rarely been considered a rousing success with few exceptions.

I don't know if it's so much honesty as reality. He will look like a complete fool if he says Blu-ray is winning and then have HD-DVD clobber Blu-ray during the holidays. I think it's just his way of getting ahead of the inevitable HD-DVD comeback headlines that are about to occur.

Back in March when the PS3 launched in Europe.

I liked his shot about "we were trying to win on merits".

When in reality they were trying to win via PS3.

There's also something strange about that quote. They were trying to win on merits. What are they going to try to win on now? Or are they going to stop trying at all?

It's the same argument being used for the PS3. They thought the consumer would choose the 'better' product regardless of price. The fact of the matter is they can't win a price war, because that was never the battle the planned for. This is the Eastern Front and these products are the soldiers without any winter gear.

This article basically gives the impression that people want Blu Ray more, but it is too expensive. So some really desperate people are getting HD DVD until Blu Ray gets cheaper.

If things don't turn around for either the PS3 or Blu-Ray this holiday season I think its fair to say not much can be expected of either in the long run. This Holiday season will determine the pecking order.
