Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Does Not Have "A Rich Online System Like Xbox Live" Says Yamauchi

What could the do in Gran Turismo for Xbox Live that he can't on PS3?

Offer free DLC for one if we're lucky!

Basically, Live requires you to use MS methods of chat, etc. to provide a uniform consistent experience, which is good obviosuly, Live also requires DLC to have a cost and has various size restrictions, etc. (this changes from time to time so I don't know latest).

PSN is basically more open in that the developer, for example, can implement their own chat approach, or method for providing DLC, or allow free user generated DLC, etc.

Specifically for GT5 I have no idea - the only real example I can think of is UT3 on PS3 has mods, etc. which (unless something has changed) I think 360 can't have as that kind of free, open content isn't allowed).

So basically he could design his own totally custom online experience without having to conform to any preset standards (well, a much smaller set) or billing structures.

That's my understanding anyway.

OT - this is why I wish Valve would actually support PS3.  They make noises about wanting to get mods, etc. on Live but being unable to.  Well, support the PS3 Gabe and you can allow mods, etc. no problem!  Oh, and congrats on the award, can't argue with that.

I'd like to see more developers actually exploit this area of PSN.  Sadly UT3 wasn't enough of a hit to have much support, although there are some maps/mods available for download, but nothing like what you see for say L4D on PC.

I cant agree, L4D Survival pack and Forza 3 car packs were free.

I disagree,

... PS3 harder to program for but end product can be better if dev has the skills. YamaSan is damn right.

Does he do his interviews in English? If not there could be a translation difference in the connotation of the words. But basically what he said was that Live uses a single system, while Sony makes each game use their own system. I suppose that is accurate.

That's pretty much what I tried to say, lol, and I'm getting bashed for some reason?

I mean, needing to create something from scratch takes time... It must definitely come with trial and error, I mean it's just common sense and I'm sure it's not always easy!

He wasn't bashing you, he was pointing out that your tangent had nothing to do with the topic at hand. Bashing implies harsh intent, which I didn't see in his posts. He may have came off a little strong, but I'm still left wondering why you're so offended.

The BuShA owns all!

Live does not "require" DLC to have a cost. It's just that MS prefers to charge for most of it (as multiple developers have stated that it's MS who decides DLC pricing, not them). Occasionally some of it is free.

For example, Bungie has stated several times in the past that, if it was up to them, the Halo 3 map packs would have been free. But MS decided that, not because it's the publisher of that game, but because they own the system and charge no fees to developers for bandwidth, like Sony does on PSN.

But then, you get the same stuff on PSN at a cost, so it's really not something that MS is particularly evil about. The only thing that can be said is that Live has a user subscription fee to pay for it's expenses, but is free to devs, while Sony keeps PSN free for users, but charges the devs. That's just one of the reasons developers prefer Live.

He has played FORZA 3, and I'd be surprised if he didn't play it online.

PSN: Parasitic_Link

he's talking about the numbers of the community and features no one wants not saying the xbl is better than PSN. jesus, morons never comprehend things right.

The PSN lets you play online games for free, thats all i need to know. im sure XBL is great, even more so since this guy praised it, but its not for everyone... so... mhm...

I would just like to dispel a few misnomers going around.

360 games can use dedicated servers. Forza 3 does. L4D does.

360 games can have consumer hosted servers. It is called XServer. Section 8 allows this.

360 games can have user generated content. Forza games do, Halo 3 does.

There has been free DLC. Forza had some, Burnout had some, L4D had some.

And yes, this developer was speaking about the services MS provides for online functionality.

Because all he did was nitpick my words when that wasn't even the point of my post anyways. I guess I didn't express myself good enough at first because I had no intention of saying anything bad about the PS3, and I felt like he thought I was doing just that.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
