Well the main factor is if Zelda Wii makes it this year. I'm skeptical about it, but if it makes it, then well we know the nature of Zelda console games and high praise haha. I won't name what I think the GOTY will be because that would be silly with none of these games out but if I had to guess potential nominees I'd think:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 possibly. But there's always the anti-Wii bias.
Zelda Wii yes, if 2010
Bioshock 2 no chance
Mass Effect 2 no chance
Halo: Reach yes
Starcraft 2 yes
Last Guardian yes, if 2010
God of War 3 no chance
Gran Turismo 5  yes
Metroid: Other M what?

Excuse me if I'm missing any, but there is a lot of big brands in 2010. I'd give outside shots to

Monster Hunter 3, Heavy Rain, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Epic Mickey, Fable 3, Final Fantasy XIII, etc. just no lol

All I know is 2010 is cluttered with some of the biggest projects ever. There has never been a year with this many big games, and the closest rivals are 2004 and namely 2007. Going to be fun to be a gamer this year.

Well don't forget my main assumption was that we can't determine exact quality of any game that hasn't released, so best we can do is just list the big brands and AAA development titles (that is what AAA means actually haha games that have high production values and intended to sell) to figure out potential nominees which ultimately give them a shot.  Then of course I throw in a little of my own knowledge of how this works which is why no handheld game is on there and why I was very weary of any real new IP aside from the big hyped ones.

Well, that's why I replied and commented on your listed games specifically. Because I strongly believe GOTY can be nailed down to a handful of titles even at this early point.

Well, we dont know much about Fable III yet and maybe a miracle happens and Molyneuz fulfills all his promises for once lol.

Anyway, lets pick God of War 3, SplinterCell, Bioshock 2 and ME 2. While Im confident they're gonna get 93-95% on Meta, they won't get GOTY simply because they're too niched, won't get enough sales and are released too early in the year.

Final Fantasy is already far too criticised even before release to have even a remote chance.

Metroid M... even that Malstrom guy hates the idea lol.

Heavy Rain - a 1 million selling interactive movie xclusive on PS3 getting GOTY? No.

You don't even attempt to hide your hate anymore.

Edit: After having a second look through the thread, perhaps I was harsh, my apologies. But I do I still feel your description of the game is vague.

You mean the "interactive movie" part of my description?

Crysis 2?

Halo: Reach will win first second and third place for GOTY everywhere!

Yeah, sure...  Seriously, GOTY contenders are :

SMG2 and Zelda for Wii

GOW 3 and GT5 for PS3

Halo:Reach for 360

Starcraft 2 for PC

Heavy Rain has no chances at all, maybe one site will give it the award and its not even sure. I'm sure it'll be good but I don't see a GAME where there is almost no GAMEplay being awarded Game of the Year.

No, but they play a certain role since they reflect popularity.

Anyway, forget that post because I was under the false impression that there's was one official GOTY we were all talking about lol. Obviously with dozens of GOTY rewards out there, with individual sites like GT, IGN, Gamespot some could give the nomination to a sub-million seller, like IGN (or was it Gamespot?) did in 2009 to Demon's Souls.

If taht's the case, then Uncharted 2 must have sold pretty damn well!

Also, in 2005 Resident Evil 4 received GOTY on the Gamecube, yet didn't sell over 3 million copies.

Sales and popularity isn't everything, but it means a lot to some people. That's why we're here on this site, on VGChartz.

And 3 million are quite good sales, especially if it was just for the GC version.

Uncharted 2 is also a very big exclusive.  Great opening week, and destined for +4 million.
