I did some research this is from IGN.
Combat in Xenoblade seems to have a Final Fantasy XII feel to it. As you run about the game's massive fields, you switch immediately into battle mode when encountering an enemy. There's no transition to a special battle screen.
Also like FFXII, a good amount of the experience seems to be automated. Your party members are all controlled by AI. Your player character automatically attacks as you freely run about the battlefield.
Your primary job appears to be in making use of "arts," which is the game's fancy name for skills -- things like special attacks, healing and so-forth. You can freely set each character with arts. Your allies will execute these arts on their own, and it's up to you to combine your player character's arts with those of your allies.
In the upper left of the battle screen, you'll see a blue gauge. This is your "Party Gauge." Build this up as you fight, and you'll gain access to team "Chain Attacks." During these special attacks, you freely select arts for all your party members.
