Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii Sets Single Month Sales Record in the United States

Ok, after seeing these numbers I've concluded that third parties are completely INSANE. I mean seriously, how do you divert support from a console that sells 3.81 million in one month?? I mean seriously, shouldn't we be concerned about the intelligence of the people running this industry?

Just wow... I expected NSMB Wii to have a huge effect, but not like this! Maybe now Nintendo finally realizes that we want more classic Mario games.

All of this 100%

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Out of curiousity, does this mean that the Wii's #'s on this site need to be adjusted up? What did VGC have the Wii selling in December?

Bah!

Lol @ economic crisis!

In the Great Depression of the 1920s / 1930s, cinema revenues skyrocketed. Tickets were cheap and it provided a much needed escape from reality for affected people (i.e. almost everyone).

Nowadays, gaming gives a high value for money. Buy a $200-$300 console every 5 years, and you have access to games which can provide you with days, weeks or months of entertainment. So people will spend less money on other things, and will still spend on gaming.

Gaming did have an impact from the recession, but December was more or less a good month (hardware revenue up, software revenue down).

Oh, don't be so analytic, I was just making a quick remark.

no, it means that NPD needs to be adjusted down

ok, in all seriousness, it means we wait for financial numbers and see where reality lands. NPD samples data too, so reality is probably somewhere between VGChartz and NPD. As stated by ioi, I wouldn't take VGChartz, NPD, or any 1 source as gospel, so just get lots of data and draw your own conclusions based on that.

As for VGC december data - http://www.vgchartz.com/amonthly.php?month=12&year=2009

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

I think software revenue has probably peaked (or nearly peaked) for the generation because, from this point forward, there is an increasing number of low-cost and high quality games available that are just as good to consumers who haven't played them as any new game. While a game like F.E.A.R 2 certainly was not worth $60 to me new at $20 it was a great deal, and the time I spent playing that recently was time I didn't spend playing a full price new game; and when you take behaviour like this and start to generalize it, it represents a drop in revenue even if people are buying more games.

Yes you may be right. Looking at the Xbox 360s chart because its another year older than the rest I can see a lot of older cheaper games creeping in at the bottom of the top 50. They may very well round out a large proportion of the titles not in the top 50 as people do seek to buy older games. In addition to this a lot of older games tend to not be played and become available used of are loaned from friends.

Regardless, it still broke the record.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

As I said in the December NPD thread, I don't consider NPD to be 100% correct ever nor or they they gospel. However, I've followed NPD for a very long time and understand their system and believe them to be within the 90th percentile of accuracy. I also believe VGC to have very solid tracking abilities and for the most times also within that 90th percentile of accuracy. Of course I'd suggest waiting til Nintendo financial reports, but whatev.

Word. Thanks, guys.
