Forums - Sales Discussion - SONY: PS3 saw 90% RISE in Hardware in USA in December 2009

December 2009: Best Month In PS3 History Says Sony’s Patrick Seybold

by Ernice Gilbert on January 14th, 2010, under Playstation 3

The PS3 just keeps moving up to higher levels as the months role on by, and now Sony has announced that last month was the best since the console launched in 2006.

According to the latest set of statistics sent out by Sony, December 2009 was the “single highest selling month for PS3 hardware and software since it launch in the US;” with a 90% rise in hardware sales and 60% jump in software sales according to a statement from senior director of corporate communications and social media at SCEA, Patrick Seybold. Also, to no one’s surprise Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was the single biggest title of the month, followed by the God of War Collection pack and LBP Game of the Year edtion.

3.8 million PS3s were sold and of that number, 1.7 million of them in the US. PSN had its “single biggest revenue month, leaping 155% from December 2008. Final Fantasy VIII was the most downloaded title on PSN for the month of December, followed by Pixel Junk Shooter. There are currently 670 games on PSN and about 38 million registered accounts.

Will PS3 be able to sustain the awesome momentum it’s seen ever since the Slim downed version was announced coupled with the price cut? If what Sony has in store for the new year is any indicator, including the spring release of the Wand Controller, and the great lineup of exclusive titles which includes: God of War III coming in March, Gran Turismo 5 coming just after and games like Heavy Rain and MAG all making their way to Sony’s console this year, the answer is yes. A resounding yes, the momentum can be sustained, easily.

I wish they would give numbers for PSN titles

1.7m for USA alone? O_O
That's 650k above the preview. They could be referring to shipped numbers still, but hardly the gap would be that big at December (I remember some saying PS3 sold out).

1/ shipped

2/ december only

3/ considering how it was in 2008 ... it is not SO amazing

4/ let's not complain, it could be worse

Time to Work !

The 90% growth is from last December. NPD had it 732k in December 2008 so a 90% growth would be 1.38 million. Source says it should be around 1.35 million-ish which falls smack in the middle of EEDAR's and Pachter's predictions.

Edit: Actually my mistake. It's slightly below their predictions.

Sony's projection and profits even after finishing out the year nicely will still be short.  If they are able to manage to do this during non peek saling days then it would mean something but since its always during the fall holiday and in the West "Tax return season" Jan 30 - Apr 15, It only shows Sony can barely manage to meet thier quota cept during those time of year.  "Sad" really.  Hopefully Sony can maintain its momemtum and catch up to its own PSP sales (even down its still ahead of PS3).  "All Hail, (It Dose Everything PS3) system!!!"

Sony projection and profit will easily be met. Projection they'l surpass by a million or so. Profit wise they originally were expecting close to a 2 billion loss. That was already almost halved in the last quarterly results. The rumours now are for breaking even for the fiscal.

That's great for Sony.

Who's the best Pac, Nas, and Big. Just leave it to that.
