December 2009: Best Month In PS3 History Says Sony’s Patrick Seybold

by Ernice Gilbert on January 14th, 2010, under Playstation 3

The PS3 just keeps moving up to higher levels as the months role on by, and now Sony has announced that last month was the best since the console launched in 2006.

According to the latest set of statistics sent out by Sony, December 2009 was the “single highest selling month for PS3 hardware and software since it launch in the US;” with a 90% rise in hardware sales and 60% jump in software sales according to a statement from senior director of corporate communications and social media at SCEA, Patrick Seybold. Also, to no one’s surprise Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was the single biggest title of the month, followed by the God of War Collection pack and LBP Game of the Year edtion.

3.8 million PS3s were sold and of that number, 1.7 million of them in the US. PSN had its “single biggest revenue month, leaping 155% from December 2008. Final Fantasy VIII was the most downloaded title on PSN for the month of December, followed by Pixel Junk Shooter. There are currently 670 games on PSN and about 38 million registered accounts.

Will PS3 be able to sustain the awesome momentum it’s seen ever since the Slim downed version was announced coupled with the price cut? If what Sony has in store for the new year is any indicator, including the spring release of the Wand Controller, and the great lineup of exclusive titles which includes: God of War III coming in March, Gran Turismo 5 coming just after and games like Heavy Rain and MAG all making their way to Sony’s console this year, the answer is yes. A resounding yes, the momentum can be sustained, easily.
