The original was partially so highly rated because it was so original.
Sequel + New Features =/= better than the original; a game is not scored simply as the quantitative sum of its various parts.

It depends. A reason why the first game was so highly rated was because of the style and atmosphere, the ideas and originality. Everything else was pretty generic though.
If they can't...it might still be praised, but I'm skeptical. Critics might hold to their feelings from the original and carry it over, but I expect criticism if they can't recreate the novel experience of the first.

But that is exactly what every single sequel is like for any game......new features and improvements from the original....by your definition no sequel should be higher than the original.

no way, GOW 3 will be better than GOW 1 and GOW 2 by a large margin. Its gonna be the highest rated hack n slash this year, blowing away darksiders, dantes inferno and bayonetta ( yes, i went there )

I don't think FF13 will be a real challenge.
I do feel like mentioning, that I think any game that relies heavily on storytelling, immersion and atmosphere will now also be compared to Uncharted 2. I think Bioshock 2 might lose a little value compared because of it, especially as they are both sequels with added multiplayer. How the B2 multiplayer will stack up is another question though.

Keep the best hack n slash out of the discussion...
.....but honestly , I dont think GOW will score as high as GOW 1 or 2 because of Bayonetta as it is the new standard in HnS.
