It depends. A reason why the first game was so highly rated was because of the style and atmosphere, the ideas and originality. Everything else was pretty generic though.
If they can't...it might still be praised, but I'm skeptical. Critics might hold to their feelings from the original and carry it over, but I expect criticism if they can't recreate the novel experience of the first.
